Skåne Care – Swedish Healthcare Excellence 3
“The Swedish health care
system is often considered
as a model for other
countries to emulate, both
because of its excellent
outcomes compared to
OECD countries and
several well-developed
strategies to assure and

REVIEWS OF HEALTH CARE QUALITY:
SWEDEN 2013
WHY SWEDEN?
TOP-RANKED
HEALTHCARE
The quality of healthcare in Sweden is consistently top-ranked.
Swedish healthcare constantly strives to improve medical results.
One unique tool is our approximately 100 national quality registries. We use these registries for learning, improvement, research,
and management to create the best possible healthcare. Sweden
is also well known for and is actively involved in international
collaboration on specialised care, improving patient safety, and
increasing patient influence. n
4 Skåne Care – Swedish Healthcare Excellence
THE SWEDISH HEALTHCARE SYSTEM:
hh Produces the highest quality medical results while
keeping costs at OECD average.
hh Builds on the principles of quality, reliability, efficiency,
and equality.
hh Is decentralised to regional levels.
hh Is largely publicly funded.
“The world-class public healthcare, training
and research performed in Skåne continue
to change the course of modern patient
care. International cooperation is an
integral part of our day-to-day activities
and an important part of the treatment we
offer today’s and future patients.”

WHY SKÅNE?
OUR FUSION
OF RESEARCH
AND CLINICAL
PRACTICE
Healthcare in Skåne is outstanding because of collaboration
among academic institutions, industries, and clinics. Every day in
Skåne, research and clinical practice integrate and interact to push
quality of healthcare forward.
For example, Skåne University Hospital is among the largest
university hospitals in Sweden, offering unique expertise in
comprehensive healthcare, medical training, and frontline
research. Lund University has a vibrant history covering over 300
years of research and is today the largest university in Scandinavia
and one of the top 100 in the world. Together, their close association allows for integrating groundbreaking research into medical
services that support outstanding patient care in prevention,
diagnosis, and treatment. n
BUILDING THE FUTURE
OF RESEARCH
Two major facilities are currently under construction in
Skåne. The MAX IV Laboratory will be a world-leading
synchrotron radiation facility. European Spallation Source,
a European facility, will house the world’s most powerful
neutron source. Together, they create new opportunities
for researchers in several fields, including the field of
life sciences.
FOCUSING ON CONNECTED
HEALTH IN SKÅNE
A major regional focus, connected health – such as eHealth,
Digital Health, mHealth, Telehealth, and Telecare – is an
area where highly skilled companies collaborate with care
providers and researchers to develop tools for a viable
market. These tools help create completely new opportunities to deliver healthcare and health information, enhance
the quality of healthcare provided, coordinate healthcare
activities, improve patient quality of life, and contribute to
increased patient participation, independence, and security.
Skåne offers a unique environment for furthering knowledge
in connected health through innovation facilities like Ideon in
Lund, communities in life science, and an established research
and development history in the mobile industry.

treatment with world-class results. Patients can receive everything
from medical evaluations and second opinions to advanced
surgeries, highly specialised treatments, and long-term rehabilitation programmes.
Requesting care is easy. Skåne Care navigates the process
and makes all administrative and financial arrangements on the
Swedish side. A devoted and efficient team is ready to help, just
an email or phone call away. Our team focuses on the details,
allowing patients to focus on the care. For individual patients or
groups of patients, we can also coordinate:
• Transportation to/from airport-accommodation-hospital.
• Accommodation – with or without a kitchenette.
• Interpreters inside and outside the hospital.
• Back-up functions for practical advice and support.
• Supporting documents for visa requests.
6 Skåne Care – Swedish Healthcare Excellence
Skåne Care and our partners work to ensure that patients’ needs
are thoroughly evaluated and met. This dedication reflects the
Swedish healthcare system as a whole, where patient safety is the
guiding principle in care delivery. For example, infection control
measures have secured a low prevalence of MRSA, which means
patients run a much lower risk of contracting multi-resistant
bacteria in Swedish hospitals than elsewhere. n
Individual patients can request medical
treatment directly trough skanecare.com.
For groups of patients, please contact our team.
OUR LOCATION
International access to Skåne is easy.

OUTCOMES EVALUATION
We assist you in evaluating the outcomes and
ensuring quality to keep driving change.
SUPPORTING A DIABETES
CENTRE IN AJMAN
Skåne University Hospital’s department for endocrinology
works closely with Lund University Diabetes Centre and
covers all aspects of diabetes with world-class results. For
example, it has worldwide recognition for outstanding
quality with its specialised Day-Care Clinic that reduces
hospital admissions.
Based on the experienced team and successful work
model, a team from Skåne University Hospital and Skåne
Care supported the establishment of a Diabetes Centre in
Ajman, United Arab Emirates, through system quality audits,
advisory services, and staff training. The centre is operated
by a Swedish partner established in the United Arab Emirates
under an agreement with the Ministry of Health. Today,
the centre offers specialists and most modalities to treat
diabetes and its complications.
NEXT GENERATION OF HOSPITALS
Photo: Region Skåne © Christiaan Dirksen
In 2010, one of the most modern facilities for emergency, trauma,
and infection was completed at Skåne University Hospital. It was
designed in close consultation with medical experts and uniquely
planned from an infection control perspective. The modern architecture and ventilation technology help reduce the risk of infection
so severe infection cases can be addressed without the infection
spreading to staff or other patients.
Skåne University Hospital has one of the largest and busiest trauma
and emergency facilities in Sweden, treating over 140,000 patients
annually. The new department was planned with optimal logistics in
mind to focus on the patient and enable staff teamwork. The result
is fast and functional healthcare, conforming to the highest national
and international standards.
Continued large-scale investments at several sites in southern
Sweden will create the next generation of hospitals fully adapted to
the demands of patients, modern technology, and environmental
sustainability.
EXAMPLES OF HEALTHCARE METHODOLOGY IN SKÅNE
ADVANCED
HOME CARE
PRIMARY
HEALTHCARE
Children and adults who are in need of palliative care are offered
advanced medical care at home as an alternative to hospitalisation.
Patients with chronic disease can also be offered advanced home care for
a limited time.
In Sweden, primary healthcare forms the foundation of the healthcare
system that is highly available to the population. More than 100
healthcare centres in Skåne provide the population with basic healthcare,
rehabilitative care and preventive care, including lifestyle interventions,
that do not require the medical and technical facilities of a hospital.
Almost all healthcare centres have a specific department for children’s
health and nearly half have maternity healthcare centres.
Benefits of advanced home care:
• Offer patients more options.
• Improve the quality of life for patients and
those closest to them.
• Reduce the number of hospitalisations.
• Encourage early release from the hospital.
A multi-disciplinary team is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to
provide high-quality, advanced care based on the patient’s physical,
psychological, social, and existential needs. The team can include
physicians, nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, dieticians,
and counsellors. This team approach addresses a variety of needs while
ensuring patient safety.
Care providers collaborate with research teams at Lund University to
continuously develop and implement evidence-based quality of care. In
addition, care providers and academia collaborate with highly skilled companies in the region’s vibrant life science and information technology clusters
to develop interactive eHealth tools. These tools create new opportunities
to provide healthcare and health information that can make patients who
receive home care feel safer and be more involved in their care.
Every day, primary healthcare centres in Skåne receive about 12,000
visits and 11,600 phone calls. Through e-solutions, patients can also
directly contact the healthcare system or access medical journals,
information, and facts.
In our patient-centred care, a first point of contact with a general
practitioner, nurse, physiotherapist, occupational therapist, dietician,
counselor, or psychologist, is offered depending on the patient’s needs.
Primary healthcare centres work in close cooperation with specialists and
refer patients if necessary, so patients receive the right level of care.

“The specialist medical training programme in Skåne is
well structured to provide you with a good working and
learning environment. The direct supervision of a mentor
and continuous assessment is also a feature in Sweden.
As an international doctor you get the same opportunity
to develop in the profession as the Swedish doctors.”
MOHAMMAD KAMIL JAN,
INTERNATIONAL DOCTOR UNDERGOING SPECIALIST MEDICAL TRAINING IN SKÅNE
OUR SPECIALIST MEDICAL TRAINING PROGRAMME FOR INTERNATIONAL DOCTORS
STUDY A SPECIALTY IN SKÅNE
Through Skåne Care, non-European doctors can earn a specialist
certificate from public health authorities within clinical training.
In a highly structured training programme, 1,000 international
and Swedish doctors are educated side-by-side with healthcare
professionals and researchers. Regulated by the National Board
of Health and Welfare, the programme meets guidelines for the
equivalent training of Swedish doctors. All training occurs at
university hospitals and public training hospitals.
Mastering Swedish is vital to gain the most from clinical
training – and for doctors and their families to integrate more
smoothly into society. Swedish is a requirement for patient
contact, which is why international doctors start their training
with a language course. Inside and outside the hospital, however,
you will encounter a variety of cultures. More than 160 nationalities live in Skåne with 100 languages spoken. Proficient English is
spoken with ease. For more facts about the region, see the Skåne
by the numbers box on the previous page. n
THROUGH THE PROGRAMME,
EVERY DOCTOR:
hh Receives an individually designed curriculum
following the Swedish model.
hh Can study for a full specialist medical training in
5 years and/or complete a sub-specialty training
fellowship of 1–2 years.
hh Earns a certificate issued by Skåne University
Hospital upon successful completion of training.
hh Begins a one-year introduction course upon arrival,
including Swedish training and practice at clinic.
hh Has access to relocation support, including help
with finding a home, local orientation, and settling
in services.
hh Has dedicated support on a day-to-day basis through
our international office at Skåne University Hospital.

OUR CENTRES OF EXCELLENCE
LEARN ABOUT
OUR SPECIALTIES
Skåne Care uses our Centres of Excellence as starting points for medical treatment, training,
and management consulting services. Because Region Skåne is responsible for providing
specialised healthcare to its 1.3 million residents and national referrals, our Centres of
Excellence cover a wide range of specialties from cardothoracic surgery to orthopaedics and
paediatric oncology. To learn more about our specialities listed on the next pages, or any areas
not listed, visit skanecare.com or contact our team.
Cardiothoracic surgery
Our department of cardiothoracic surgery
is the largest centre in Sweden. It is one of
two Swedish centres performing all national
heart transplantations, lung transplantations,
and surgeries for adults with congenital heart
defects. The department:
• Annually conducts 1,150 open heart and
550 general thoracic surgeries.
• Is the only centre in Scandinavia with
the da Vinci system for robot-assisted
minimally invasive cardiac surgery.
• Performs comprehensive cardiothoracic
surgeries, including all treatments for
coronary and valvular disease.
In all aspects of cardiac surgery, Skåne
University Hospital provides world-class results.
An example is the very low 30-day mortality
rate (1.0%) for coronary bypass surgery at
Skåne University Hospital in 2013.

Cardiology
Our department for coronary heart diseases is
the largest in Sweden for coronary angiography
and percutaneous coronary intervention
(PCI). Our outcome rates are equal to the best
international centres, despite our numbers
of high-risk patients and patients previously
denied surgery. The department includes:
• More than 3,500 coronary angiography
and PCI procedures per year.
• About 60 transcatheter aortic valve
replacement (TAVR) procedures per year.
• Two operators with extensive experience
in TAVR Lotus Valve who perform inter
national proctoring services.
Patients with chronic symptomatic coronary
artery disease, or refractory angina, are
investigated and treated. The central hospital
in Kristianstad, in collaboration with Skåne
University Hospital, was the first in Sweden
with the noninvasive method of enhanced
external counterpulsation therapy.
Vascular surgery
Our vascular centre is a major award-winning
referral centre with world-renowned experts.
The centre leads methodology development
for endovascular techniques, particularly for
complex aortic aneurysm. It is a European
centre of excellence for the treatment of
hypertension, including arterial disease.
Paediatric heart surgery
Our centre for paediatric cardiac surgery is the
largest in Scandinavia. It is one of two centres
in Sweden. All forms of surgical treatment
are offered to children with congenital heart
defects, including heart transplantation
and mechanical heart support for children
on waiting lists. Around 350 heart surgical
procedures are performed annually with top
international results. Because of this high
quality, the centre treats all Icelandic cases of
children with congenital heart defects.
Paediatric haematology,
oncology, and immunology
Our department of paediatric haematology,
oncology, and immunology at Skåne University
Hospital provides innovative and comprehensive
diagnosis and treatment for children and
adolescents with cancer, as well as haematologic
and immunologic diseases. Unique medical
results are delivered by an integrated team
at a single, child-friendly location within the
Children’s Hospital.
Within the range of treatments available, a
particular departmental speciality is stem cell
transplantations for children with:
• Malignant disease such as acute leukemia
and solid tumours.
• Non-malignant diseases such as
immune-deficiency, thalassemia,
osteopetrosis, sickle cell anemia, aplastic
anemia, and inborn errors of metabolism
(e.g. mucopolysaccharidosis).
Since 1998 we have been one of the few
European centres to regularly perform
haploidentical stem cell transplantations, where
a parent is used as the donor. The transplant is
performed when identical donor is not available.
Through applying this method, successful
medical results have been achieved when
other treatment protocols have failed, also on
international patients.
Allogeneic stem cell transplantations, with
human leukocyte antigen identical sibling or
matched unrelated donor, is also performed
for all current indications, malignant and non-
malignant. The most recent recommendations
of the European Group for Blood and Bone
Marrow Transplantation (EBMT centre number
CIC:283) are used.
Skåne Care – Swedish Healthcare Excellence 17

University Diabetes Centre (LUDC), one of
the largest such centres in Europe. LUDC
is at the forefront of methodologies for
identifying causes of diabetes, with one of
the world’s largest and best characterised
biobanks in the diabetes field.
• urological cancer
• head/neck cancer
• brain tumours
Our teams pioneered robotic surgery for
gynaecological cancer and several benign
conditions – a field our teams lead in Europe
and internationally regarding volumes,
applications, and publications. Annually,

Rehabilitation Facilities. It is one of the largest
clinics within rehabilitation medicine in
Scandinavia. A regional Centre of Knowledge,
the department’s mission is to incorporate,
test, and disseminate new knowledge in the
field and promote evidence-based methods in
rehabilitation. Specialist team members work
together with patients and their families to
establish goals, choose appropriate treatment
options, and set the pace for recovery.
Orthopaedics
Hospitals in Region Skåne have extensive
experience in providing top quality specialist
interventions for orthopaedics and associated
rehabilitation. Physicians and other staff
work in an integrated and cooperative group

worth exploring. Skåne offers creative, unusual, and authentic
experiences within close distances.
We have 400 kilometers of coastline in three directions
with long, inviting sandy beaches, as well as deep forests in the
central and northeastern parts, and steep rocky precipices in the
northwest. The rural areas and the charming fishing villages are
close to the cities, with cosmopolitan Malmö in the southwest and
the major European city of Copenhagen close by.
Skåne’s history is clearly visible, not least at our 200 castles and
manors. Many of the castles welcome visitors, offering experience
for those with an interest in gardening, art, food and of course
history. Culturally you find international concert halls, art
exhibitions, theatre and cuisine to suit all tastes.
The climate in Skåne makes enjoying yourself easy. With
generally long summers and mild winters you can experience all
that Skåne has to offer in comfort, whether it’s indoor or outdoor
activities you’re interested in. Skåne is neither one thing nor the
other. Skåne has a bit of everything, and makes enjoying yourself
easy. For more information, visit www.visitskane.com/en. n
