Body Orientation and Direction Anatomical Position The human body is erect, with feet slightly apart, head and toes pointed forward, and arms hanging at the side with palms facing forward. Superior Above This term refers to placement of a structure along the long axis of the body. Inferior Below This term refers to placement of a structure along the long axis of the body. Anterior Front Posterior Back Medial Toward the midline Lateral Away from the midline or median plane Dorsal Backside Ventral Belly side Proximal Nearer the trunk or attached end Primarily used to locate various areas of the body limbs. Distal Farther from the trunk or point of attachment Primarily used to locate various areas of the body limbs.
