MORPHOLOGICALLY AND
FUNCTIONALLY DIFFERENT TYPES OF
INTERCELLULAR CONNECTIONS IN THE
CEREBELLUM

HISTOLOGICAL LAYERS
Molecular layer:
• Densely innervated by the
dendrite trees of purkinje
cells
Purkinje cell layer:
• Location of the cell bodies
of purkinje cells and the
origin of their main
dendritic shaft
Granular layer:
• Tightly packed neurons
MAIN CONSTITUENTS
Purkinje cell:
• Extensive dendrite tree
• Axon leaves the cerebellar cortex
Climbing fiber:
• Transmits information
Basket cell:
• Innervates the axon hillocks of
purkinje cells
Granule cell:
• Axons reach out into the
molecular layer
Mossy fiber:
• Transmits information
Golgi cell:
• Controlls axo-dendritic synapses
FUNCTIONING
Parallel contacts:
Climbing fibers – purkinje
cells
Cerebellar glomeruli
Mossy fibers – granule cells
– Golgi neurons
Cross over synapses
Parallel fibers – Purkinje cells
Basket-like synapses
Basket cells – purkinje cells
