SENTENCES are determined by VERBS
Six sentence patterns
1.INTRANSITIVE verb NP(Subj) VP (predicate) NO DIRECT OBJECT. But PP (prepositional phrases)
are okay. (Optional PP (prepositional phrase) in curly brackets { }.)
EX:
I ran.
I ran {to the store}.
PP
TRANSITIVE (3 types) --MUST take a direct object (Direct Objects underlined)
2. Regular Transitive: NP subj V NP (Direct Object) Optional PPs
EX:
I bought the book.
I bought the book {on Amazon.com}.
3. Transitive (give-type) NP(subj) V NP (Indirect Obj) NP (Direct Obj)
(alternate form NP V NP (DO) To NP (IO)
IO (Indirect Objects) bolded.
EX:
I gave my roommate the book.
I gave the book to my roommate.
4. Transitive (Obj Comp type) NP V NP(DO) NP (Obj Comp)
(alternate form NP V NP (DO) (to be) NP (Obj Comp)
NP(Obj Comp) (Object complement noun phrase) Italics
EX:
We elected Sam class president.
We elected Sam (to be) class president.
5. LINKING NP V NP (Subj. Complement
or
NP V Adj (subj. comp)
NP V Adj
Second NP or adjective describes the subject
NP(Subj Comp)
Adj. (Subj Comp) Noun Phrase subject complements and Adjective subject complements CAPTALS
EX:
Jonathan became A TEACHER. (NP Subj Comp)
Jonathan seems HAPPY. (Adj Subj Comp)
6. BE (like Linking) NP BE NP
EX:
I am a TEACHER.
NP BE NP (subj comp)
EX:
I am HAPPY.
NP BE Adjective (Adj subj comp)
or
NP BE Adj (subj comp)
AND
EX:
I am {in the kitchen}.
NP BE (adverb of time or place—either single word or PP—in the example, a PP)
