Three very large sheets are separated by equal distances of 20.0 cm (Fig. 2242). The first and third sheets are very thin and nonconducting and have surface
charge densities of +8.50 µC/m2 and -8.50 µC/m2, respectively. The middle sheet
is conducting but has no net charge.
Figure 22-42
(a) What is the electric field inside the middle sheet?
Since the middle sheet is conductive, no charge will be inside it and therefore,
the electrical field inside is zero.
(b) What is the electric field between the left and middle sheets?
E=σ/2ε0 where σ is the charge density.
=>E=8.5e-6/2/8.854e-12=4.8e5 (N/Coul)
(c) What is the electric field between the middle and right sheets?
E=-8.5e-6/2/8.854e-12=-4.8e5 (N/Coul)
(d) What is the charge density on the surface of the middle sheet facing the left
sheet?
-8.5 uC/m2
(e) What is the charge density on the surface of the middle sheet facing the right
sheet?
8.5 uC/m2
