 Highly infectious with as few as 10 – 100 virus particles may cause
disease
 Estimated 55,000 episodes of rotavirus infection occur each year in
Scotland and of these approx. 1200 children admitted to hospital
 Almost all children become infected by age 5 years
 Estimated that around half of all gastroenteritis in children under 5
years caused by rotavirus
