Questions with To Be – (Question word) am/are/is + subject …. ?
 Where are you from?

Simple Present Continuous – Subject + be + verb-ing ...
Activities that are in progress (or happening) at the moment the speaker is talking
 She is making dinner now.
 I am not enjoying this class.
Simple Past
Actions that started and finished at a specific time in the past.
Simple past statements – Subject + past tense verb ...
 I arrived in Ecuador in October.
 She studied English at CEC.
Simple Past Questions – (Question word) + did + subject + base form of verb …?
 What did you do yesterday?
 Did she go to work last week?
Simple Past Questions with To Be – (Question word) + was/were + subject …?
 Where were you last night?
 Was she happy with her gift?
Used to




Habits and situations that were true in the past that aren't true now
Repeated (or habitual) actions or states that started and finished in the fast
To compare how a present situation is different from the past
NEVER use “used to” with an action that only happened one time.
Affirmative Statements – Subject + used to + base form of verb ….
 She used to swim everyday.
Negative Statements – Subject + did not + use to + base form of verb …
 You didn't use to eat onions.
Negative Statements with never – Subject + never + used to + base form of verb ...
 I never used to enjoy studying.
Questions – (Question word) + did + subject + use to + base form of verb ….
 Did you use to be interested in learning Italian?
Present Perfect

Indefinite past time – to talk about actions or states that happened at an unexact time in the past
(do not use with things that happened at a specific time in the past!!!!)
 Connect the past and the present – to talk about actions or states that began in the past and have
continued up to present time
o For + a length of time = how long an action or state has continued until present time
o Since + a point in time = when an action or state began
Affirmative Statements – Subject + have/has + past participle...
 She has traveled to Paris three times. (We don't know when she traveled = indefinite time =
present perfect)
 I have worked here since October.
 We have lived in South America for a year.
Negative Statements – Subject have/has not + past participle …
 You haven't eaten anything.
Questions – (Question word) + have/has + past participle... ?
 Have you ever tried cuy?
 Has she broken up with her boyfriend yet?
 Have you still not seen that movie?
Words commonly used with the present perfect:
 Ever = at any time
 Never = at no point in time


Yet = up until the present
Still = up to and including the present
time mentioned
The Future


Be (not) going to + base form of verb... = definite plans
o I am going to visit Chile over the next break. I just bought my plane ticket.
o She is not going to the concert tonight. She couldn’t find tickets.
Will (not) + base form of verb... = possible plans that are less definite; often used with other
words that indicate possibility – I think; I guess; probably; maybe
o Maybe we’ll visit the zoo in Santiago, but we’re still not sure.
