Looking Inside Cells
Structures that Surround a Cell
• Cell Wall
– Only in plant cells
– Provide shape and support
• Cell Membrane
– In all cells
– Controls what goes into and out of a
cell
• Cell City Function: Gate Keeper/
Guard
Cytoplasm
• The watery, gel-like substance everything
in the cell floats in.
The Nucleus
• The cell’s control center
– Largest structure inside the cell
– Contains deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA)
– Cell City Function: City Hall
Organelles
• Structures inside a cell that carry out
specific functions
Mitochondria
• Rod shaped structures that produce
energy for the cell
• Cell City Function: Power Plant
Endoplasmic Reticulum
• A maze of passageways that transport
materials throughout the cell.
– Rough E.R. has ribosomes and smooth does
not
• Cell City Function: Highways / Roads
Ribosomes
• Very small organelles that make proteins
– Located on rough endoplasmic reticulum and
throughout cell in cytoplasm
• Cell City Function: Cement Plant / Mixer
Truck
Golgi Bodies
• Organelles that package and distribute
proteins throughout the cell
• Cell City Function: Mail Truck
Chloroplasts
• Green structures that convert the sun’s
energy into food (carbohydrates).
– Only found in plant cells
• Cell City Function: Bakery
Vacuole
• Large sacs that store food and water
• Cell City Function: Grocery Store
Lysosomes
• Small structures that contain chemicals for
breaking down food and waste for use or
disposal.
• Cell City Function: Garbage Truck
