Our Place in Space
By: Isabella, Justin, and Aurora
What is a Solar System?
• There are eight bodies called
planets in our Solar System.
• A Solar System is the sun and
groups of planets and bodies
that orbit.
• Our Solar System is one piece of
the universe.
The Sun
• The sun is made of
hot gases which
makes light and
heat.
• More than 100
earths could go
around the sun.
• The sun is a
medium sized star.
The Inner Planets
• Small, ball shaped planets.
• They are solid and rocky.
• They all have craters.
• Mercury is the
closest planet to
the sun.
• Mercury has no
atmosphere
which allows
rocks to hit the
surface and
create craters.
• 1 day on
Mercury is as
long as a year.
Mercury
• Venus is the
hottest planet
in the solar
system.
• It’s
surrounded by
clouds of
sulfuric acid.
• Venus has
permanent
lava flows.
Venus
Earth
• Earth is the only
planet that has
oxygen and water
for life.
• Earth has a
protective blanket
around it called
the atmosphere.
• Earth is the only
planet we know of
that has life.
Mars
• Mars is covered with red rock and dust
called iron oxide.
• Mars might have had oceans and rivers
in the canals.
• Mars has a thin atmosphere which
creates craters.
Asteroid Belt
• It’s made of
millions of
fragments of
rocks left from the
planets.
• Some pieces are
dislodged and
enter the
atmosphere
where they burn
up and are called
meteorites.
• Some asteroids
are as big as a
house and some
are as small as a
pebble.
Outer Planets
• The gas planets are the are the farthest from
the sun.
• The gas planets are also called the gas giants.
• All of the gas planets have rings.
Jupiter
• Jupiter is a
gas giant but
it has a rocky
core.
• 1,300 Earths
can fit inside
of Jupiter.
• Jupiter has
62 moons.
Saturn
• Saturn rings
are the
brightest in
the solar
system.
• Saturn rings
are made of
ice rock and
dust.
• Saturn has
61 moons.
• Uranus ton
its side
• 64 Earths can
fit inside of
Uranus.
• The
atmosphere
gives Uranus
its greenish
blue color.
• Uranus is
almost
featureless.
Uranus
• The
fourth
largest
planet.
• Has 13
moons.
• Has an
atmosph
ere made
of
methane
gas that
gives it
its blue
color.
Neptune
BLACK HOLES
• WHEN STARS RUN OUT OF GAS AND FALL.
BLACK HOLES APPEAR.
