Safe Drinking Water Act The Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) was originally passed by Congress in 1974 and amended in 1986 and 1996 to ensure that the nation's public drinking water supply is safe. As required by the SDWA, the United States Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA) is responsible for setting national drinking water standards that water providers must follow. In the State of Texas, the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) is responsible for making sure that all water providers are following the requirements set by the SDWA and standards set by the US EPA. Water supplies are monitored for: Inorganic chemicals such as metals and minerals Organic chemicals Bacteria Protozoans Radiological components Physical components Results of the testing of drinking water provided by GCWA can be found on the Water Quality Web page listed under the Reports & Data section of the website.
