Insect Structure and Function
Insects’ bodies are made up of segments. The segments are grouped into 3 regions;
head (6 segments fused together), thorax (3 segments), and
abdomen (11 segments but often not all of these are visible)
Each thoracic segment carries a pair of jointed legs. There are no legs on the abdomen.
The second and third thoracic segments usually carry a pair of wings.
The head has a set of mouthparts, a pair of compound eyes and a pair of antennae.
The insects ‘skin’ is called the cuticle, the outer layer of which is usually hard and
inflexible. The inner, softer layer allows movement between the body segments and the
limb joints.
The drawing of the cockroach (Periplaneta americana) shows the principle features of
insects.
