Law of Sines and
Law of Cosines
Intro
• Trig learned so far this chapter only
applied to right triangles. (30-60-90,
SOH-CAH-TOA, ect.)
• Trig in this section can be used to find
missing measures in ANY triangle.
Law of Sines
• sin A sin B sin C
a
b
c
-The law of sines is used when you
know two angles and one side
(AAS or ASA).
Example 1
• Find x. Round to the nearest tenth.
Example 2
• Find x, round to the nearest degree.
Law of Cosines
• a2 = b2 + c2 – 2bc cos A
• b2 = a2 + c2 – 2bc cos B
• c2 = a2 + b2 – 2bc cos C
• The Law of Cosines is used when you
know two sides and their included
angle (SAS) or three sides (SSS).
Example 3
• Find x. Round to the nearest tenth.
Example 4
• Find x, round to the nearest degree.
Example 5
• Solve triangle ABC. (Find all missing
sides and angles.)
