Goal 3: Weather Forecasting Weather – daily temperature/precipitation Climate – average temperature/precipitation over time The Water Cycle Ground Water Ocean Air Pressure *Low Pressure – increased wind and precipitation *High Pressure – clear skies FRONTS Cold Front Rude – takes over and pushes warm front up Warm Front Laid Back – rises over cold front Stationary Front Cold and Warm front meet and neither moves Occluded Front Two cold air masses meet and the warm air between them is pushed upward. Stormy/Windy Rain Showers Overcast/Rainy Rain and Snow Cooler air follows front Warmer air follow front Cool Temperatures Cloud Categories There are four basic cloud categories observed in our atmosphere: high-level clouds ice crystals thin and white fair weather white fluffy cotton balls Cumulonimbus – bring summer storms (thunder, lightning, strong winds) blanket like can cover the entire sky gray and dull weather fog Cirrus Cumulus Stratus Sea Breeze Global Circulation and Wind Patterns
