Blood borne Pathogens Training - New Employee
Purpose of Policy - To eliminate or minimize exposure to potentially infectious materials in the workplace.
Blood borne Pathogens – microorganisms carried by blood and other body fluids that are infectious.
Most common – HBV (Hepatitis B) and HIV
*Your risk for acquiring HBV is 100 times greater than acquiring HIV – approximately 300,000 people become
infected every year in the U.S. with HBV.
Half of all the HBV infected people have no symptoms but can pass the HBV to others.
How could you become infected in the school setting?
1. By coming in contact with infected fluid that enters your body through open cuts, abrasions, acne
and eczema.
2. Working with disabled students that need dependent care by school employees.
3. Contamination through broken glass (glass may have blood contamination) or objects.
How to protect yourself:
*Comply with the mandates of Universal Precautions
What are Universal Precautions?
*Treating all individuals as potential carriers of blood borne disease
What do I do?
1. Use PPE-personal protective equipment-gloves always, (eye covering and masks as warranted)
2. Wash hands thoroughly after removing gloves (gloves are a protective barrier but not always
impermeable)
3. Dispose of infected material in red bags only (each employee will receive one for their room)
4. Bleach is needed for a clean up to area
5. Exposure Control Plan
If you are exposed – please call Kim Couch 815-928-7249 for proper forms and follow up
Hepatitis B Vaccine - Series of three injections over six months, offered free to employees and given at the
