Study Guide for Topics 5.1 and 5.2
For each assessment statement, pay attention to the bolded command term. These command terms will be
used on all tests in this class and in the IB exam. Each term asks for a specific answer. Be sure to look up each
command term and understand what it is asking for. Command terms are listed in a doc below this assignment or
can be found in flashcard form in the Class Resources tab.
Each command terms is also leveled from 1 to 3. Find the appropriate level and label each assessment
statement.

Objective 1 is basic knowledge and is often stating facts or defining terms.

Objective 2 is application and is asking you to go into greater depth with the material giving more
detailed descriptions or summaries.

Objective 3 is extension and is often asking you to apply theories to new situations or to interpret data
you've never seen before.
Evidence for Evolution 5.1
Assessment Statement
Define evolution
Outline the evidence for evolution provided by the fossil record and selective
breeding of domesticated animals
Describe how homologous structures can have similar features but very different
functions through adaptive radiation
State that members of a species display variation using a named example
Explain the changes seen in the peppered moth population during the 20th century
Outline how populations may diverge into separate species by evolution
Explain how variation in species and their geographical locations support the theory
of gradual divergence
Compare the pentadactly limb between two named species. Include how the
structure of the limb aids in it’s function in locomotion
Objective

Natural Selection 5.2
Assessment Statement
Explain why natural selection can only occur if there is variation among members of
the same species
Explain how sexual reproduction, meiosis and mutations promotes variation in a
species
State that adaptations are characteristics that make an individual suited to its
environment and way of life using a named example
State that populations tend to produce more offspring than the environment is able
to support
Explain the consequence of the potential overproduction of offspring is a struggle for
survival
Explain how natural selection leads to evolution
Explain two examples of evolution in response to environmental change using
antibiotic resistant bacteria and finches on Daphne Major as an example.
