VOCABULARY
• An equation is a mathematical sentence
showing two expressions are equal.
3+2
5
• An equation contains an equal sign, =.
• When you replace a variable with a value that
results in a true sentence, you solve the
equation.
• Equations may contain variables. If a value for a
variable makes an equation true, that value is a
solution of the equation.
s + 15 = 27
s = 12
12 + 15
s = 10
27
10 + 15
27
Reading Math
An equation has an equal sign, but an
expression does not. An equation can be
solved, but an expression can only be
evaluated or simplified.
Reading Math
The symbol  means “is not equal to.”
I DO (foldable)
s + 15 = 27
b - 447 = 1203
for b = 1650
x (27) = 1485
for x = 54
u + 56 = 139
for u = 73
WE DO (notes)
1)An equation is shown. X + 5 = 14
Which of the values can be substituted
for x to make the equation true?
A. 7
B. 9
C. 14
D. 15
2) An equation is shown. 8x = 34 What
is the value for x that makes the
equation true?
