Elizabethtown-Lewis Central School Algebra 2 Common Core Syllabus 2016-2017 Instructor: James E. Sheffer Course Description In Algebra 2 Common Core, the students have four main topics to understand. They are the following: 1. Polynomial, Rational, and Radical Relationships 2. Trigonometric Functions 3. Exponential and Logarithmic Functions 4. Inferences and Conclusions from Data In the first topic, students connect polynomial arithmetic to computations with whole numbers and integers. Polynomial equations, zeros of polynomials, graphs of polynomial functions, and complex numbers are explored. The second topic builds on students’ previous work with units and with functions from Algebra I, and with trigonometric ratios and circles from high school Geometry. Precise definitions of sine and cosine are emphasized. The third topic extends the students’ knowledge of function families to include exponential and logarithmic functions. Graphs of functions along with identifying appropriate types of functions to model a situation are learned. Finally in the fourth topic, students build a formal understanding of probability, considering complex events such as unions, intersections, and complements as well as the concept of independence and conditional probability. Students will be informed of the necessary variations. 9/8 9/9 Introduction, Rules, Basic Trig Review Pre-Test (Various Questions from past Trig Regents) 9/12 9/13 9/14 9/15 9/16 Review: Expressions, Equations, and Functions Linear Functions and Rate of Change Functions Solving Systems of Linear Equations and Inequalities Solving Systems of Linear Inequalities by Graphing 9/19 9/20 9/21 9/22 9/23 Polynomial Operations Parabolas Review of Previous Material Assessment: Review Material from Algebra I and Geometry Functions, Domain and Range, Piecewise Functions 9/26 9/27 9/28 9/29 9/30 Scatter Plots, Linear Regression and Trend Lines Working with Models Seeing Structure in Equations and Expressions Review of Themes in Algebra 2 Assessment: Themes in Algebra 2 10/3 10/4 10/5 10/6 10/7 Factoring Polynomials Factoring Sums and Differences of Cubes;
