In many trigonometry problems, the terms Angle
of Elevation and Angle of Depression are used.
If you are looking up at an object then the angle
between the horizontal and your line of sight is the
angle of elevation. If you are looking down at an
object then the angle between the horizontal and
your line of sight is the angle of depression.
(a) What is true about these two angles?
(b) Which of the angles measure
Angles of elevation _______
Angles of depression _______
1) From the top of an 86 foot lighthouse, the angle of depression to a ship in the
ocean is 23°. How far is the ship from the base of the lighthouse? Round your answer
to the nearest foot.
2) A tree casts a shadow that is 24 feet long. Find the height of the tree if the angle of
elevation is 35.7o. Round your answer to the nearest foot.
3) Harold is hang gliding off a cliff that is 120 feet high. He needs to travel 350 feet
horizontally to reach his destination. To the nearest degree, what is his angle of
descent, A?
4) Sitting at the top of a 57 ft. cliff, a lioness sees an elephant. The angle of
depression from the lioness to the elephant is 22. What is the shortest distance from
the lioness to the elephant? Round to the nearest tenth of a foot.
