BYU Hawaii Curriculum Proposal Number
[15-09]
Section 2 – Overview (Support)
Since History 201 and 202 are no longer required of all students as part of the General
Education program they now need to be explicitly required for History students as part of the
Core Classes.
Adding these two classes into the History Core and moving Geography 101 into the elective
pool will add 3 credits to the total number required to complete the major. With 18 History
core credits and 24 elective credits, the B.A. in History will increase to 42 credits from the
current 39 credits.

WAS:
Any eight history courses, six of which must be upper-division electives (numbered 250 and
above).
To broaden their understanding of the major world cultures, history majors are required to
complete at least one upper-division course from three of the following five major geographic
areas: America, Asia, Europe, Middle East, and the Pacific Islands. First-year students should
consider taking History 120 and History 121, the introductory American History sequence. The
History professors strongly recommended that history majors take at least two years of a foreign
language and an economics class. History majors are encouraged to minor in a field that enhances
their preparation for employment or graduate school. Consult with faculty.
