INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
SEPTEMBER 17, 2010
A RESOLUTION
Designating the month of September 2010 as "Ovarian Cancer
Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, Every woman is at risk for ovarian cancer regardless
of age, heritage or medical history; and
WHEREAS, According to the American Cancer Society, a woman's
risk of being diagnosed with ovarian cancer during her lifetime
is 1 in 67; and
WHEREAS, Ovarian cancer is the ninth most common cancer among
women, and the fifth leading cause of cancer death among women;
and
WHEREAS, Approximately two-thirds of women with ovarian
cancer are 55 years of age or older; and
WHEREAS, The American Cancer Society estimates that there
will be approximately 21,880 new cases of ovarian cancer in the
United States in 2010 and that 13,850 women will die from
ovarian cancer in 2010; and
WHEREAS, About one-fifth of ovarian cancers are found at an
early stage; and
WHEREAS, Early detection improves the chances of survival;
and
WHEREAS, Nine out of ten women treated for early ovarian
cancer will live longer than five years after the cancer is
found; and
WHEREAS, Ovarian cancer awareness and education is an
important factor in diagnosis and treatment; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate the
month of September 2010 as "Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month" in
Pennsylvania.
