WilliamBillingsisanimportantfigureinAmericanmusic,althoughnotwellknown.Bornin1746,hisworks channeltheruggedspirit,religiousfaith,andpatrioticfervoroftheRevolutionaryWar.ItisfittingthatSchuman chosetoportraysimilarfeelingsinNewEnglandTriptychthroughtheuseofBillings’works. WestSideStoryisamodernretellingofShakespeare’sclassicwork,RomeoandJuliet.Themusicalservedasthe groundsforoneofthegreatestcollaborationsinAmericanmusic:composerLeonardBernstein,playwrightArthur Laurents,andlyricistStephenSondheim,threetitansofAmericanmusic. AaronCopland’sdepictionofthenotoriouscowboy‐killer,BillytheKid,isatributetotheromanticizedAmerican West.Originallyaballet,asuitecontainingthemostrecognizablemomentsoftheballetwaspublishedin1940. Composedinsevenepisodes,theBoulderPhilharmonicOrchestrawillpresentthree:PrairieNight,Waltz,and CelebrationDance. Toconcludethenight,theBoulderPhilharmonicOrchestrawillcollaboratewiththeBoulderBallettore‐create anotherCoplandmasterpiece.Copland’ssecondwesternballet,Rodeo,wascomposedin1942.Atfirst,Copland wasnotinterestedinwritingasecond“cowboyballet”;however,hewaseventuallyconvincedofitsmeritsand createdthepieceusingtraditionalwesternballadsandfiddletunes.TheBoulderPhilharmonic’sproductionof RodeowillfeatureoriginalchoreographybyAnaClaire,artisticdirectorofBoulderBallet.
