Instructions: For this assignment, I want you to “respond” to what we have learned so far,
and integrate the content of the articles covered in this class with your own insights. Recall
that:




In the sociological imagination, C Wright Mills believes that sociologists understand
the linkage between personal experience and the structure of society by recognizing
the connections between personal troubles and public issues.
Allan Johnson in “The Forest for the Trees” discusses what it means to be a practicing
sociologist and why it matters.
Donna Gaines in “Teenage Wasteland” applies the sociological imagination to
teenage suicide.
Other articles such as “Finding out How the Social World Works” and “Working at
Bazooms” suggest how we can be sociologically mindful.
Using what we have learned in class, answer the following two questions in an essay:
Question One:



Discuss one issue in Chinese society that could be understood as either a personal
trouble or a public issue.
How do the readings help us understand that problem sociologically?
How does a mastery of the sociological perspective help you better understand your
social world and your personal life?
Question Two:


Think about the problem discussed in question one. What do we already know about
this issue, and how do we know these things?
Think about the different methods of research used in the readings and in class so far,
and discuss how you would try to research the issue.
For both questions, remember to do the following:







Synthesis and integrate at least three articles from your readings
Provide examples in your essay
Use at least one of each of the following: quotes, paraphrases, and summaries
Use proper APA format for citing and referencing
Don’t just summarize! Integrate! Use your own insights also!
