Ancient Greece All Around Us
In The Lightning Thief, Chiron tells Percy, “America is now the
heart of the flame. It is the great power of the West. And so
Olympus is here.” Discuss the presence of mythology and
Ancient Greek symbols in today’s western world. Can children
think of any modern-day icons that harken back to Greece?
In the Percy Jackson series, Mt. Olympus is located atop the
Empire State Building; where would Olympus be located in
their town?
Heroes
Children who discover their powers and grow to be legendary
heroes are a familiar theme in many classic books, movies, and
television shows. Ask the children what a hero means to them
and what qualities make Percy Jackson a hero. Can they think
of other fictional characters that have a similar journey to
Percy? Challenge them to think about heroes in today’s world
— what characteristics make them like Percy Jackson?
There’s No Escaping Fate
Artemis says in The Titan’s Curse, “Life is a fragile thing, Percy.
If the Fates will the string to be cut, there is little I can do.” In
The Sea of Monsters, Annabeth tells Percy, “But every time heroes
learn the future, they try to change it, and it never works.”
What do the children believe is Percy’s destiny based on the
prophecy? Does he worry about his own fate and that of his
friends? Discuss whether a person’s destiny changes if he or she
tries to alter the course of their lives.

WHAT A CHARACTER!
From gods to monsters, there is no shortage of unique
characters throughout the Percy Jackson & the Olympians
series. Ask the children to select the one character throughout
the five books that they relate to the most. What unique traits
make that character special?
The Meaning of Family
One thread that runs through all the Percy Jackson books is
the impact of family relationships on the demigods; the books
especially emphasize the presence of fathers in the kids’ lives.
Talk about the Camp Half-Blood cabin selection process —
how “undetermined” campers stay in the Hermes cabin until
they are “determined” — and ask which characters have a
good relationships with their parents (Percy with his mom,
for example) and which characters have unclear or troubled
relationships (Nico with Hades, or Luke and Hermes in
The Last Olympian). Why do kids think it’s important for campers
to be “determined” by their mothers or fathers?
Being Different Can Be Magical
In The Lightning Thief, Annabeth explains that demigod children
have a tendency to be dyslexic and/or ADHD — dyslexia
means their minds are “hardwired for ancient Greek” and
ADHD is a sign of “battlefield reflexes.” Also, Percy thinks that
Grover is crippled at the beginning of the book, but he finds
out later that Grover has hooves. Use these examples to discuss
learning and physical disabilities, and how kids with these
challenges are gifted, too. Then ask the children to think about
their unique qualities.

Who Am I?
Get kids familiar with Greek mythology by playing this exciting multilevel tournament. Begin by writing down
major and minor Greek gods, Titans, or monsters on slips of paper. We’ve provided you with a list to start
things off. Then randomly divide the audience into four-player groups: three “guessers” and one adult. Each
group will be challenged to guess the identity of the “mystery guest” — a god, Titan, or monster — played by
the adult.
The game begins with Level 1, the easiest level — major figures. Have the adult in each group pick a name
out of a hat as their identity and keep it secret. Now, each of the three “guessers” takes turns asking ask
the adult one yes or no question about him-/herself — remember, the adult must only answer yes or no!
The questions keep coming, and any “guesser” may try to guess the identity of the adult following his/her
question; when one of them guesses correctly, he or she moves on to Level 2.
All of the Level 1 winners reform into random Level 2 teams and the same thing happens, only the identities
of the “mystery guests” in Level 2 are a little more difficult to guess. The tournament keeps going level by level
until there are only three “guessers” left — the Final Level, which has the most difficult “mystery guest” to
identify. The child with the correct guess is the winner!
Note: Participating adults will need to prepare in advance to be able answer questions about their character.
See next page for list of mythological figures.

Medusa’s Freeze Tag
Play this easy and fun variation of tag—with
a mythological twist! Start by cutting out small
squares of paper—as many as there are players.
On one piece of paper, draw a picture of a snake
(or Medusa’s head).
Fold the squares and put them in a hat. Each player
chooses a piece of paper; the player who gets the
one with the picture of the snake is Medusa, while
the other players are demigods.
Medusa’s objective is to freeze every other player
in the game by touching them. When a player is
frozen, he or she must stop and remain in whatever
position they were in when they were touched.
Other players, the demigods, can try to “rescue”
frozen players: to unfreeze them, they must crawl
between a frozen player’s legs.
The game continues until Medusa freezes
everyone — the last player to be frozen then becomes
Medusa, and the game starts all over again.
