National Committe (NC) Annual Report - India
2011-2012
National Program for Orevention and Control of Deafness (NPPCD) was started in 2006 with
its pilot project run in 25 districts. Currently it is being run in India as part of Eleventh Five
Year Plan under the chairmanship of honourable minister for health and Dr. A.K. Agarwal
Add. Director General Health services a (President, Sound Hearing 2030) as the nodal officer
for the program. The program is being implemented through National Rural health mission
(NRHM).
1.
Sound Hearing Collaboration with National Programme for prevention and control
of deafness.
The secretariat of Sound Hearing 2030 is very actively collaborating with NPPCD in
terms of provision of technical guidance regarding various components of the
programme viz. training, capacity building, development of IC material and
procurement of hearing aids. The office of Sound hearing at MAMC has also active
inputs from the department of Community Medicine ,ENT and Paeditrics.
2.
Upgrading the accessible website
Fully accessible website developed professionally in the year 2010 is being updated
from time to time from the India office (www.soundhearing2030.org).
3.
Country Strategy Paper on Ear and hearing care
National committee strategy paper was prepared under aegis of Sound Hearing 2030
with active support from CBM and National and international experts.Inclusion
workshop was clubbed with EC meeting at Maulana Azad Medical College Delhi and
guidelines developed by Dr MNG Mani and his team were discussed.Development
and Field testing of the awareness material in the form of posters flip charts and
pamphlets was done in which department of community medicine played a vital role
in field testing of the material.
4.
Adaptation of WHO Training Modules
Valuable inputs were provided by Indian experts towards adaptation of WHO training
manuals into training modules.
1. Promoting partnerships of Sound Hearing and National committee with National and
International NGOs/DPOs/Trg. Institutes, Disability Networks:
a.
Members of National committee and Sound hearing helped in organisation of
National Convention for the teachers of the deaf and the presentations
included:
i.

Sound Hearing 2030: Preventing Hearing Loss: Dr. Shelly Chadha
iii.
Sound Hearing 2030: Role of IEC in prevention of hearing loss: Dr.
SuneelaGarg
b.
For Global coalition of hearing health, Sound hearing was represented by
Dr Shelly Chadha and Dr SuneelaGarg, where keynote address was delivered
by Dr Shelly Chadha and Dr SuneelaGarg spoke on “Integration of ear and
hearing care with eye-care programme.”
6.
Pilot project for operational research in HI and Blindness program
Pilot program for operational research in hearing impairement and blind program was
developed in 2010 and has been field tested at two ‘Vision centres’ in collaboration
with the ’Shroff Charitable Eye Care Hospital’ in India. The vision technicians at both
the centres have undergone training in Ear & Hearing care services and are now
carrying out screening, referral and awareness activities in the community.
7.
Celebration OF International Ear and hearing care Day
International ear and hearing care day was celebrated in india in rural and urban
settings. Sensitization of medical faculty, residents, nurses and students was done in
the form of poster exhibition. The highlights of the program were role plays and quiz
competition by the doctors and the nurses. The community was very interactive as
was obvious in the quiz. Sensitization of medical faculty, residents, nurses and
students was done in the form of poster exhibition.
Dr A. K Agarwal, Dean MAMC and nodal officer NPPCD, India, inaugurated
cochlear implant center at Government Medical College Chandigarh, India.
8.
Other Activities
a.
Infant hearing screening guidelines were developed by Sound hearing 2030
with support from WHO India office.
b.
Sound hearing has been providing inputs regarding identification of barriers
and challenges in ear and hearing care in the communities.
c.
International Noise day will be celebrated on 25thApril in the community and
the report will be sent shortly after.
