HQT Lesson 3 Math
Lesson # 3:
Learning Goal / Target: Students will be able to identify, interpret and represent statistics and
probability to real world scenarios.
Standards: General Standards: Summarize, represent, and interpret data on a single count or measurement
variable
1. Represent data with plots on the real number line (dot plots, histograms, and box plots).
2. Use statistics appropriate to the shape of the data distribution to compare center (median, mean) and spread
(interquartile range, standard deviation) of two or more different data sets.
Math Extended Standard:



SP.ID.912.1a Create a bar graph to represent given or collected data. SP.ID.912.1b Create a dot plot to
represent given or collected data. SP.ID.912.1c Match a dot plot with a given data set.
SD.ID.912.2a Compute mean, median and mode of a given or collected data set. SP.ID.912.2b Compute
mean (average), median or mode of a given or collected data set involving numbers less than 100.
SP.ID.912.2c Identify the median and mode of a given data set involving numbers less than 100.
SP.ID.912.3a Interpret a bar graph. SP.ID.912.3b Interpret a dot plot. SP.ID.912.3c Complete an
incomplete dot plot (e.g., adding missing labels and missing data points).
Materials / Resources:
Graph paper, calculator,
Vocabulary:
 Statistics, mean, median, mode, number line, graphs, histograms, box plots, trend-line,
charts
Lesson:
 “Bell ringer”- students need to calculate the mean of these numbers; 21, 3, 45, 9
o Determine from this quick assessment what and how to review the terms.
 Review vocabulary terms and how the information can be represented.
 Ask for input on what types of items to collect data / information on (statistics) from the
class. (ex.; how many milk cartons are not consumed at lunch? How many people packed?,
how many people do not have a cell phone?)
 Complete Statistics skills worksheet Q. 1-3 in class.
 Demonstrate how to set up a bar graph to add information.
o Use the list to ask questions about calculating mean, median, and mode
Assignment:
 Use the list of information to plot on a graph the mean median, mode.
Questions:
What worked and why? What worked with this lesson was two fold. It was engaging to the
students as they were able to come up with ideas to collect data for that was relevant to them.
As well as, it allowed for a “basic” lesson to branch off in many directions.

HQT Lesson 3 Math
What did I learn from the lesson? There are so many avenues to teach statistics and
probability. Not many resources are needed outside of the time to collect data.
If you were to teach this lesson again, what would you change and why? Depending on the
skill level of the group I would touch on the probability portion hat would lead into the next
lesson.
How can you further apply what you have learned to future lessons? This can easily be
applied to not only math, but the other core courses and electives in a high school setting. For
example, history, by using data to create a chart or graph from the text, that when viewed this
way, may be easier for the student to understand.
