COMMUNICATION PROCESS
WHAT IS COMMUNICATION?
• Communication is the process of sending and receiving
messages.
• INTERpersonal communication happens with 2+ people
• Can’t “communicate with others” without the ‘others’ part
• Communication is a process….has its own model to go with it.
THE COMMUNICATION MODEL
SENDER
Sender: the person who sends
the message.
• They want the information to
go out to other people
THE COMMUNICATION MODEL
BUT WAIT!!! What is the sender, sending?
Message: the information to
be conveyed
•
Sender
The message needs to be encoded as well.
Encoding: transforming your thoughts
of the information to be conveyed into
a form that can be sent
THE COMMUNICATION MODEL
Encoded message
Let’s say the sender has chosen to use WORDS to convey his message.
Words would be the way he “encodes” the message. Now he has to
decide what CHANNEL OF COMMUNICATION he is going to use
Sender
Channel of Communication: the manner in which the
message is sent out
• Channels include: speaking, writing, videos, audio,
emails/texts/faxes.
• Can include nonverbal communication also.
THE COMMUNICATION MODEL
Encoded message
The message must have someone to be sent to.
Receiver: The target of the
communication
•
Sender
The receiver is responsible for decoding the information
Decoding: mentally processing the
message into understanding
