Trace-BasedReasoning
We,theTWEAKresearchgroup,developedthenewfieldofresearchcalledTrace-BasedReasoning
(TBR,e.g.,Cordier,Lefevre,Champin,Georgeon,&Mille2013).TBRpertainstothedomainof
DynamicalKnowledgeEngineering.Morespecifically,TBRisasortofCase-BasedReasoningapplied
tolearningfrominitiallyunsegmentedandpossiblyuninterpretedsequencesofeventsof
interaction.ATBRsystemincrementallydiscovers,records,hierarchicallyabstracts,andreuses
interestingepisodesofinteractionatdifferentlevelsofabstraction.
TBRhasmanypracticalapplicationsincludingautonomousrobotadaptation,co-evolutionofhumanmachineinteraction,andbehavioralanalysisandmodeling.TBRalsobringstheoreticalinsightsfor
implementingconstructivistlearninganddevelopmentalartificialintelligence.ThisisbecauseTBR
providesatechnicalframeworkforimplementingintrinsically-motivatedbottom-upselfprogrammingagents.Intrinsically-motivatedbottom-upself-programmingcontributestoachieving
constitutiveautonomy,whichtheoreticiansofénactionconsideramongstthemajorchallengesof
strongAI(e.g.,Froese&Ziemke2009).Inessence,theagent(e.g.,robot)self-developsby
“sedimentationofhabitudes”,assomephilosophersofmindhaveintuitedsincetheenlightenments
(e.g.,DavidHume).
BiologicallyInspiredCognitiveArchitecturesandDevelopmentalArtificialIntelligence
IamdrawinginspirationfromTBR,epistemology,andneurosciencetodesignarchitectures,
algorithms,andmethodstoreplicatesituatedcognition(i.e.,inwhich,“knowledgedevelopsasa
meansofcoordinatingactivitywithinactivityitself”,Clancey1997).MycolleaguesandIproposed
theEnactiveCognitiveArchitecture(ECA,Georgeon,Marshall,&Manzotti,2013).ECAavoids
makingcommonassumptionsmadebyothercognitivearchitectures,forexamplethatthe
environmentisstationary,deterministic,ordiscrete,orthatinputdataisMarkovianor
representativeofapredefinedmodeloftheenvironment.ECAaddressesthesymbol-grounding
problem(Harnad1992)byallowingarobottoengageintheconstructionofitsownproto-ontology
ofrealitybasedonitsindividualexperienceofinteraction.ECA’simplementationrestsuponthe
RadicalInteractionismdesigncommitment(Georgeon&Aha2013)inspiredbyTrace-Based
Reasoning,whichendowsECAwithconstitutiveautonomy.
