Care of the Child with Neurologic,
Sensory, and Musculoskeletal Disorders
LAP Objective:
After completion of this LAP, you will be able to discuss neurologic, sensory, and
musculoskeletal disorders. You will be able to explain appropriate nursing interventions,
diagnostic procedures, clinical manifestations, and medical management for neurologic,
sensory, and musculoskeletal disorders of the child. This knowledge will be evidenced by
scoring a minimum of 80% on the chapter exam.
Specific Objectives
1. Define key terms associated
2. Discuss the anatomy and physiology of the pediatric neurologic and sensory systems.
3. Describe the neurologic and sensory disorders to include manifestations, diagnosis,
treatment, nursing considerations.
4. Explain appropriate nursing interventions for children with neurologic and sensory
disorders.
5. Describe appropriate assessment skills used to determine neurological and sensory
disorders to include: Glasgow Coma Scale, Snellen Letter Chart, Snellen E or picture chart,
pure tone audiometry, and typanometry
6. Discuss the anatomy and physiology of the pediatric musculoskeletal system.
7. Describe musculoskeletal disorders to include manifestations, diagnosis, treatment,
nursing considerations.
8. Explain appropriate nursing interventions for children with musculoskeletal disorders.
9. Calculate pharmacological medications for children with neurological, sensory, and
musculoskeletal disorders based off weight.
10. Discuss patient teaching for children with neurological, sensory, and musculoskeletal
disorders.
11. Evaluate the therapeutic effects of medications used to treat children with these disorders.
