Unit 1 Test Review: Lab Safety, Levels of Organization and Structure and
Function of Cells
You will be tested on the following concepts/information for your first science test on Monday,
September 23 (A-DAY) or Tuesday, September 24 (B-DAY)
1. What is the function (job) of the lysosome? What nickname did you give the lysosome to help you remember its
function? Explain why your nickname helps you to remember the function of the lysosome.
The lysosome digests (breaks down) proteins, fats and wastes. Whatever the lysosome can’t break down, it
transports to the cell membrane for removal.
Nickname: EX: Garbage man, because the lysosome gets rid of waste just like the garbage man gets rid of
trash
2. What is the function (job) of the chloroplast? What nickname did you give the chloroplast to help you remember
its function? Explain why your nickname helps you to remember the function of the chloroplast
The chloroplast transforms light energy to chemical energy in the form of sugar (glucose) for the plant to use
as energy. This process is called photosynthesis
Nickname: EX: solar panels, because the chloroplast transforms light energy to chemical energy just like a
solar panel transform light energy into electrical or mechanical energy.
3. What is the function (job) of the mitochondria? The mitochondria produces ATP that the cell uses for energy.
What nickname did you give the mitochondria to help you remember its function?
The mitochondria uses sugar (glucose) to make ATP for the plant to use as energy.
Nickname: EX: power house or generator because the mitochondria changes sugar into energy (ATP) for the
cell to use for different processes
4. List three other words that mean convert
Change, transform ,modify
5. What is inside of the nucleus that gives the nucleus the ability to control the functions of the cell’s organelles
and also allows the cell to reproduce?
DNA
6. What cell organelle allows for materials to enter and leave the cell? What is a nickname for this organelle?
Cell membrane
Nickname: Bouncer/ Border patrol / security guard
7. What is inside of the nucleus that stores heredity information and controls the activities of the cell.
DNA
8. What is the function (job) of the cell membrane? What does the word regulate mean?
Allows for materials to enter and leave the cell. Regulate means to control.
9. What is photosynthesis? This process converts _______________ to ____________________ for the plant to
use for energy
Light energy to chemical energy (in the form of glucose)
10. What 2 organelles does the plant cell contain that the animal cell does not?
Cell Wall, Chloroplast
11. What is the function of the muscle tissue in your arms? What is the function of the heart tissue? What do these
two organs have in common?
The function (job) of the muscle tissue in your arms Is to pull on your bones so they will move, the
function of your heart tissue is to contract so your heart will beat. These two organs have movement
in common.
12. What type of cell (bone, muscle, nerve or skin) do you think would have the most mitochondria? Why?
Muscle, because your muscle cells need a great deal of energy in order to move your bones/body
13. What is the smallest unit or “building block” of organisms (living things)?
Cell
14. Write 3 characteristics of tissues. List 2 examples.
Tissues are living, 2 or more cells working together make tissues, tissues make organs
Ex: skin tissue, muscle tissue
15. Write 3 characteristics of organs. List 2 examples.
Organs are living, Tissues working together make organs, organs make organ systems
Ex: heart, lungs, brain
16. Write 3 characteristics of organ systems. List 2 examples.
Organs systems are living, organ systems working together make organisms, an organism may have multiple
organ systems
Ex: circulatory system, nervous system, respiratory system
17. Write 3 characteristics of organisms. List 2 examples.
Organisms are living, an organism may be unicellular or multi-cellular, multiple organ systems
Ex: Humans, plants, fish, birds and the list goes on 
18. List the correct level of organization from lowest level (simplest) to highest level (most complex) of organization.
Draw a pyramid showing the correct organization.
Cells, Tissues, Organs, Organ Systems, ORGANISMS
