Controlling Blood Pressure (CBP)
One prevention and screening measure for the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS)
Star ratings system and the Healthcare Effectiveness Data and Information Set (HEDIS®) is
controlling blood pressure (CBP).
This measure evaluates the percentage of members 18 to 85 years of age who had a diagnosis of
hypertension (HTN) and whose blood pressure was adequately controlled (less than 140/90). The
table below outlines ICD-9-CM Diagnosis codes that indicate hypertension. The HEDIS Technical
Specifications advise adequate control for HTN is indicated in the medical records by both a
representative systolic BP of less than 140 mm Hg and a representative diastolic BP of less than
90 mm Hg (BP in the normal or high-normal range).
