How do little elephants grow up to be BIG elephants? The process of cell division, during which the duplicated contents of the cell’s nucleus divide into two equal parts. Mitosis has four stages. . . 1. 2. 3. 4. Prophase is the stage during which sister chromatids condense and the chromosomes become visible. Metaphase is the stage of mitosis in which chromosomes are aligned across the center of the cell. Anaphase is the stage of mitosis in which the centromere splits apart and the chromatids are pulled to opposite sides of the cell by spindle fibers. Telophase is the stage of mitosis during which two daughter nuclei are formed. In humans, the process of mitosis begins after a sperm fertilizes an egg… …and continues your entire life. 1. 2. 3. 4. Growth Repair Replacement Reproduction Following mitosis, cytokinesis must occur: this is the separation of the two nuclei and cell contents into two daughter cells (in plant cells, a cell plate forms during cytokinesis that helps form the cell wall). This is not a stage of mitosis but is a significant event that signifies the end of mitosis and the start of a new cell cycle. Is the continuous sequence of cell growth and division, including the stages of interphase, mitosis, and cytokinesis (requires 800 minutes for a full cycle in most cells). Interphase includes the periods of cell growth (G1 and G2) and the stage of DNA replication (S stage).
