What does “congruent” mean?
Choose one of the tangram shapes. Then make another
shape congruent to that one by combining other pieces.
How do you know the new shape you have made is
congruent to the first shape you chose?
Congruent Triangles
Using the AngLegs, form 3 congruent triangles. You should
be able to snap them on top of each other to check that they
are congruent.
Once you are sure the triangles you have created are
congruent, measure the angles and the sides of each
triangle. What do you notice?
Try these:
1. Two triangles are almost congruent. Describe the
triangles as completely as you can. Tell why they are
almost congruent.
2. Decide if each statement is true or false and explain your
thinking.
The triangles are congruent if:
a. The two triangles have 3 pairs of equal sides
b. Two sides and the angle between them in one
triangle are equal to two sides and the angle
between them in another triangle
c. Two angles and the side between them are equal
to two angles and the side between them in
another triangle
d. Two triangles have 2 corresponding sides that are
equal
e. Two angles and a side that is not between them in
one triangle are equal to two angles and the
corresponding side in another triangle
f. Two triangles have 3 equal parts (sides or angles)
