Field Epidemiological Study
ISSUE No.7
Feb. 2015
PROJECT NEWSLETTER
The Project has been conducting epidemiological studies on drug resistant bacteria in the northern part of
Vietnam since 2014. In the eyes of field epidemiology, statistical patterns, causes and effects have been
deeply analyzed so that the Project can hypothesize feasible public health actions to reduce high prevalence
of drug resistant bacteria in local communities. Not only epidemiologists but also microbiologists,
pharmacologists and anthropologists from the Project members are thinking together to screen risk factors of
increasing drug resistant bacteria and design a framework of epidemiological studies in Hanoi and Thai Binh.
Project for “Determine the Outbreak Mechanisms and
Development of a Surveillance Model for Multi-Drug
Resistant Bacteria”
Progress Meeting at Nha Trang
 At NIN in November 2014, microbiologists, pharmacologists and anthropologists exchanged evidence
of prevalence of ESBL-producing E.coli and questionnaire data on hygiene conditions, customs in a
local community. An expert epidemiologist from Japan made consultation on how to deal with statistics
and to select risk factors.
An epidemiologist of TBMPU reported
statistics of ESBL prevalence at a commune
in Thai Binh. Exchanging opinions with
Japanese researchers, TBMPU team blushed
up their statistical study. After discussion,
researchers visited field sites in local
communes to see actual conditions.
 In January 2015, researchers of NIN and TBMPU have kept screening risk factors via web meeting and
intensive meeting with Japanese researchers. At last, the members hypothesized risk factors and
feasible intervention activities to reduce increase of ESBL producing bacteria in targeted local
communes.

The 3rd Progress Meeting was held at Pasteur Institute of Nha Trang on 26th November 2014. The
meeting was to make an activity plan in 2015, while exchanging the progress and scientific evidences of
2014 with Vietnamese and Japanese researchers. Total 31 members attended the meeting and shared
research status and plan. At the end of the meeting, the project leader and the chief advisor, witnessed by
representatives of five institutions, agreed to the minutes of meeting that specified scope of research
activities.

Digest of Research Activities, Nov. 2014– Feb.2015
Completed Master Course in Public Health
In November 2014, a microbiologist of the Project, Mr. Le Quoc Phong has completed Master
Course in Public Health at Thai Binh Medical and Pharmaceutical University (TBMPU). He
presented his master thesis, “Study on molecular epidemiology of extended-spectrum
β-lactamase-producing Escherichia coli isolated from food in Nha Trang” which was highly
appreciated by Scientific Council of TBMPU (Advisors: Prof. Pham Ngoc Khai and Prof. Yamasaki
Shinji). Mr. Phong, who is a researcher in Pasteur Institute in Nha Trang (PINT), has started his
course since November 2012. Engaging in the Project activities in Nha Trang, he has also
completed training courses by the Project in Hanoi and Japan. His big efforts to research and
experiences in the Project have contributed to the Master Course. Paying thanks for the Project
supports, he noted that “I would like to say many thanks to Prof. Pham Ngoc Khai (TBMPU) and
Prof. Yamasaki Shinji (Osaka Prefecture University) who instructed me during the time I did for my
thesis.”

The President Award
In November 2014, Ms. Hoang Hoi Phuong was awarded by the president of Osaka Prefecture
University (OPU) for her outstanding research achievements in the University. OPU praised her
presentation award in March 2014 from Japanese Society for Bacteriology as well as her efforts to PhD
course in OPU. Ms. Phuong, who is from Institute of Public Health HCMC, has been taking a PhD
course under Prof. Yamasaki’s supervision at OPU since April 2013. She is actively disseminating her
research on a mouse model of ESBL-producing E.coli not only in domestic conferences but also
international conferences.
