SILK
SILK is a natural protein obtained from silkworm which is nourished with natural plant mulberry tree. Because of high water‐retaining function and easiness of dyeing as well as its characteristic glossiness and fine touch, it has been used as material of clothes.
Silk is synthesized and secreted at silk gland of five‐year‐old silkworm. In the body of worm, it exists in a condition of solution called liquid silk. Liquid silk, covered with Sericin, is jetted from mouth to become fiber with which cocoon is built finally. Quantity of cocoon fiber made by a silk worm is 0.3~0.5 g which can be extended to string of 800~1,400 m.
Cocoon fiber consists of fibroin (70~80 %) and Sericin (20~30 %).Processed with hot water or dilute alkali, fiber gives beautiful gloss characteristic of silk, because of solution of Sericin. Silk fibroin is composed of glycine (40 %), alanine (25 %) and serine (13 %). They are regularly ordered with glycine in every second position like –G –A –G –X –G –A –(G: glycine, A: alanine, X: other amino acid).
Fibroin has excellent water‐retention and extension. Owing to these function together with fine touch, it has been used to make‐up products as original powder form since olden times and recently its hydrolyte has been used mainly to haircare products as hydrolytes of other proteins like collagen keratin.
In view of protection of nature and environment problem, availability and wonderful character of silk secreted by silkworm fed artificially is highly estimated.

Figure. 1
Judging from amino acid composition, hydrolyzed collagen is to be applied to skin care products because of similarity of amino acid composition to human skin, and hydrolyzed keratin is to be applied to hair care products because of similarity of amino acid composition to human hair. In view of stability of quality, silk protein, which is composed of neutral amino acid, is to be most strongly recommended.

Application of Silk Protein to Cosmetics
Water Retention of Silk Protein
Figure 2 shows correlation between relative humidity and hygroscopic efficacy in the test with silk amino acid, silk polypeptide, collagen polypeptide, keratin polypeptide and glycerin as samples to verify humectancy.
Each protein, because of hydrophilic group in molecular such as –NH2, ‐OH, ‐COOH, enjoys good hygroscopic efficacy. Test result shows the same efficacies of every humectant in dry condition, but it also shows silk polypeptide is least affected by relative humidity. Applying silk polypeptide, we can expect non‐
tacky finished product.

Film Making Function of Silk Protein
In order to verify film making function of silk polypeptide, following test was conducted by using silk polypeptide and keratin polypeptide.
1. Paint each sample adjusted to a certain concentration on glass plate and dry to make film.
2. Keep each sample in a vessel at a certain temperature for 24 hours. Area and strength of film is measured as per breach by pencils of different hardness. Film making function is judged higher as film is made at higher temperature and strength of film is judged more excellent as hardness of used pencil is bigger.

Results explain that in regard to film making function, silk polypeptide and collagen polypeptide are of equal ability and in regard to strength if film, silk polypeptide is the best.
If silk protein is applied to hair care product, efficacies are maintained even at high humidity and it is of a great use for protection of hair against mechanical function 7
Application of Silk Protein to Cosmetics
1. Hydrolyzed Silk Polypeptide
Silk amino acid, hydrolyzed silk, has been used to hair care products like shampoo etc. because of good humectancy and film making. Recently since polypeptides with adjusted molecular weight have been developed, a lot of applications find suitable products. Silk polypeptide is used for shampoo, rinse, treatment as well as skin lotion, skin cream, cleansing cream, soap, etc. Further because of excellent film making function, it is recently used to pre‐treatment liquid of permanent wave, too. It is verified by test that if pre‐treated with fibroin, hair proves more resistant and protected against chemical reaction because film of fibroin peptide on hair is in more stable condition of crystal. Speaking of structure, silk polypeptide is composed of strong and elastic crystalline part and soft and extensible non‐crystalline part. So the film becomes soft as well as tough and protects hair against mechanical action of combing and brushing.
2. Silk Ester (Hydrolyzed Silk Ethyl Ester)
As hydrolyzed protein is soluble in water but solubility in ethanol is limited, it is difficult to use in formulation with alcoholic base. Recently ethyl ester of hydrolyzed silk polypeptide, completely soluble in alcohol is developed. It has become possible to apply silk polypeptide in hair spray, hair styling mousse with alcoholic base.
Figure 3
As shown in Figure 3, silk ethyl ester is very hygroscopic silk polypeptide with good solubility. It can be used to nail remover, hair tonic, etc. New applications are expected.
Solubility : water, ethanol, 1PA, PG, 1.3‐butylene glycol, glycerine, aceton, butyl acetate
8
Application of Silk Protein to Cosmetics
3. Quaternary Silk Protein
Just developed is quaternary silk polypeptide which is trimethyl quaternary ammonium derivative of silk polypeptide. Before quaternary ammonium salts was used to hair shampoo etc. but they were alkyltrimethyl ammonium chloride, dialkyldimethyl ammonium chloride, alkyldimethyl benzilchorode, etc. with long chain alkyl of 16~18C. They soften hair by adsorption but on the other hand, apt to damage hair, when used too much, because of their strong surfactancy which dissolves out lipid and protein of skin. Quaternary derivative of silk polypeptide with good film making character and adsorbance to hair, proves to be well protective for hair, forming soft and humectant film on it by using alone or together with traditional quaternary derivative.
4. Silk Powder Silk powder is micronized powder of natural silk fibroin. Its silky touch, glossiness, moderate hydrophilicity, oleophilicity, good adhesion to skin allow silk powder applications to powdery cosmetics. But usable quantity is limited to keep coverage and gloss of base pigment. Efficacy of fibroin does not stand up well in some formulations.

Product Details SILKPRO CM‐1000 Hydrolyzed Silk Polypeptide
SILKPRO CM‐1000 has been developed for eliminating the product stickiness under hot & humid condition. SILKPRO is an aqueous silk amino acid, and has been used in many hair care products on the market. Because of its low molecular weight (400 on the average), SILKPRO has strong adsorption which can set hard hair however, when a large quantity is used, the product may become somewhat sticky under hot and humid condition.
SILKPRO CM‐1000 has been developed for the purpose of eliminating the above disadvantage. The molecular weight of SILKPRO CM‐1000 is controlled at 1000 on the average, which is fairly close to silk fibroin. It uniformly retains water, makes flexible film, imparts gentle tough and avoids flaking phenomenon. This high molecular product goes well with soft hair in high humidity and skin care products.

Product Details SILKALL 100 Silk Powder
SILKALL 100 is specifically designed for use in Powder Make‐up Products to improve product quality.
Silk consists of fibroin protein and has a unique property. Silk retains 13% water in itself; this amount is equal to necessary quality for healthy human skin. Moisturizing effect of silk is highly appreciated in cosmetic industry. Pleasant touch of silk fascinates ladies all over the world in its dressed form as well as in cosmetic use. Silk has been used in powder make‐up products, such as pressed powder, eye shadow, etc. Adding 3‐20% of SILKALL 100 in pressed powder can greatly improve the feel of the product.
The fiber structure of silk fibroin is able to prevent the powder products from aggregating, hardening or caking. The silk powder contained products always remain soft and powdery condition as its water‐
retaining function of silk will imparts the moisturizing touch on skin. Specifications: Appearance
