CREATED OR
EVOLVED?
• What does science say?
Some scientists say • IT WAS EVOLUTION
– all undirected and completely by chance
– a very popular belief!
• All living things have gradually changed or evolved by
natural selection over millions of years, going back
through countless ancestors to more and more simple
organisms,
- then to the initiation of life,
- then to the origin of the universe and what it is made
from
- then to ??
The Bible says • “By Him were all things created, that are in
heaven, and that are in the earth, visible
and invisible …” (Col 1.16)
• “Thou art worthy, O Lord, … for thou hast
created all things, and for Thy pleasure
they are and were created.” (Rev 4.11)
What is Science?
System of knowledge derived from
observation, measurement, experiment
Investigates material things
- the physical universe
Powerful influence in everyday life
Huge benefits - and risks!
Limited in scope!
What is Creation?
Purposeful production of something new
A completed process
Requires intelligence, design, energy
Requires a Creator / Designer who has
- plan & purpose
- ability & resources
TO CREATE • We require starting
materials
• Operate within
material world
• Obey its laws
e.g., “matter cannot be
created or destroyed”
• God creates from
nothing!
• Operates outside
material world
• Is superior to the laws
which He made - is not bound by them
What is evolution in everyday life?
e.g., in technology, transport, healthcare
Change in response to external influences
driven by “improvement” - intelligently directed & planned
- not random, not purposeless
What is evolution in natural world?
1. Real and observed ADAPTATION
WITHIN SPECIES
Changes in living things
to survive – “natural selection”
to improve – e.g. cross breeding
Variety within species only!
- limits fixed!
Selective breeding of
plants & animals
Only within limits of “kinds”, - e.g.
- varieties of wheat, sweet peas, etc
by cross pollination
but can’t pollinate apples by plums!
- types of horses, cattle, dogs, etc
by cross breeding
but horse + donkey  mule - - sterile!
Evolution in the natural world
1. Observed fact which is
ADAPTATION within species
2. Proposed theory
to explain origin of different species
also by natural selection
Truth of 1 does not mean truth of 2
- - extrapolation too far!
EXTRAPOLATION
“True here” is not always “True there”!
• expansion of steel rod, 0 - 1000 oC
- then 1000 – 2000 oC??
• growth of child, 1-17 yrs
- then 17-70 yrs??
• changes within boundary of species
- then across boundary??
Different rules can apply!
WHERE DID ALL THIS COME FROM?
an amazing universe,
a world with beautiful intricate
life forms, large and small …
- WHERE DID WE COME FROM?
CREATED OR
EVOLVED?
SCIENCE HAS ALL THE
ANSWERS!
• “Science has shown that …”
• “Scientists believe that …”
WHAT QUESTIONS?
Science can answer 1. Does sugar dissolve in water?
2. Does the sun go round the earth?
3. What is the speed of light?
4. Is matter made of atoms?
5. Are different species the result of evolution?
EVIDENCES?
ALTERNATIVES?
EXPERIMENTS?
CANNOT ANSWER WHAT IT
CANNOT MEASURE
•
•
•
•
•
•
Is a sunset beautiful?
Is it OK to cheat at games? In commerce?
What should nuclear power be used for?
Why am I here?
What happens after I die?
Does God exist?
Where Do We Start?
Weigh the facts of science
Science •
•
•
•
•
studies material world only – measures things
looks at cause and effect – evidence?
investigates relationships between variables
tries to understand / explain
finds patterns, order, laws obeyed
predictable environment
THEORY OR LAW MUST EXPLAIN ALL FACTS NO EXCEPTIONS ALLOWED!
BUT - EVOLUTION THEORY DOES NOT
EXPLAIN ALL THE FACTS
– IN MANY AREAS
EVOLUTION THEORY IS
CONTRADICTED BY SEVERAL
ESTABLISHED LAWS OF SCIENCE
Did no one tell you this?
LAWS OF THERMODYNAMICS
= ENERGY & WORK
1. ENERGY CANNOT BE CREATED OR
DESTROYED.
So where did all the energy and material in the
universe come from?
• The Big Bang ? – cause? – a beginning!
• Always there? – eternal?
• Someone outside of the universe put it there? –
Almighty God?
THERMODYNAMICS LAW 2
• IN ALL NATURAL PROCESSES, ENTROPY
INCREASES.
[entropy = disorder, chaos]
• PROCESSES OCCUR NATURALLY WHEN
THE PRODUCTS ARE MORE DISORDERED
THAN STARTING MATERIALS.
So how did simpler things/systems become
more complex - on their own? - or created?
Complex
What happens naturally?
proteins
Build up or break down?
What is more stable?
Reverse
of evolution !
Simple components
THERMODYNAMICS LAW 2
As entropy increases,
energy available
to produce work is
always decreasing
– none left if
energy was
always there!
- WAS CREATED!
LAW OF BIOGENESIS (LIFE)
[Science of infection control and sterility]
Dead matter does not / cannot produce life
Living things can be derived only from other
living things
Therefore life from outside universe – GOD?
LAWS OF INFORMATION
- a prerequisite for life
1. Requires an intelligent source
2. Communicated by code / language
3. Source and receptor must use same code
/ language
4. Information is not material but its storage
and transmission uses material
Therefore information from a supreme
intelligence? – GOD?
NATURAL LAWS
•
•
•
•
•
Discovered by scientific observation
NEVER BROKEN – no choice!
Hence reliable and ordered environment
Contradict evolution
Support creation
MORAL LAWS
written in Bible
•
•
•
•
for good of all
promoted by conscience
often broken!
Consequences?  chaotic society
 personal loss – temporary?
– eternal!
• Choice is ours!
– heaven or hell?
THE GOOD NEWS
• “While we were yet sinners, Christ died for
us”
Romans 5.8
• “The wages of sin is death, but the gift of
God is eternal life”
Romans 6.23
• “Being justified by faith we have peace
with God through our Lord Jesus Christ”
Romans 5.1
Finding answers
• By scientific methods
- research and measurement
• Considering evidences
• Believing information
given by others
REASON +
REVELATION
• By personal
experience
THE EXPERIMENT !
Weigh the evidence
Consider the options
Decide to test it !
Taste and see
that the Lord is good.
Blessed is the one
that trusts in HIM.
Psalm 34.8
