FEET AND ANKLE MUSCLES
PERONEUS LONGUS
Peroneus
Longus
The Peroneus Longus is located on
the side of the lower leg and under
the foot.
MUSCLE SPECIFICS
The peroneus longus originates on the outside of the lower leg primarily on the fibula. It travels
down the outside of the lower leg wrapping under the outside of the ankle and continues along
the bottom of the foot where it inserts at the base of the big toe on the plantar surface.
MUSCLE ACTION(S)
The peroneus longus is responsible for helping evert the ankle (i.e., rolling it inward) and
pushing down the ankle and foot (i.e., plantar flexion).
REAL LIFE MOVEMENTS
In real life movements like walking and running the peroneus longus lengthens under load like
a bungee cord to help support the lateral longitudinal arch, the medial longitudinal arch and the
transverse arches. This lengthening enables the muscle to store energy which is used to help
transfer weight from the outside to the inside of the foot as the muscle contracts (i.e., it helps
the foot and ankle pronate at the right rate and prevent overpronation).
REAL LIFE MOVEMENT EXAMPLE
The peroneus longus is involved in helping maintain the integrity and strength of the arches of
the feet during all weight bearing activities such as standing, walking and running.
HELPFUL TIPS
The peroneus longus acts like a stirrup on the outside of the leg to help hold up the arches of
the foot and control pronation.
