This year’s Summit, scheduled for October 3rd and 4th at the West Des Moines Marriott, features local and national speakers, including a policy panel discussion by four members of Iowa’s General Assembly. The two-day Cancer Summit is organized each year by the Iowa Cancer Consortium (ICC), which coordinates the efforts of hundreds of individuals and organizations working together to conquer cancer in Iowa. Highlights of the 2012 Iowa Cancer Summit will include: October 3rd Keynote: Fulfilling the Potential for Cancer Prevention in Iowa, Sue Curry, PhD, Dean of the University of Iowa College of Public Health Presentation of the 2012 Iowa Cancer Champion Award and the 2012 Karen Packer Spirit of Collaboration Award October 4th Keynote: Collaborating for the Future, Tom Kean, MPH, President and CEO of C-Change (www.c-changetogether.org) Iowa legislative panel discussion: The Role of Policy in State Comprehensive Cancer Control, featuring a panel of Iowa legislators. The 2012 Cancer Summit will also observe the tenth anniversary of the ICC. ICC President George Weiner, MD, says the Iowa Cancer Summit is about cultivating partnerships that help reduce the burden of cancer in Iowa. “We are making progress against cancer, but not fast enough,” he says. “Working together helps us conduct cancer research, provide better clinical care, and encourage healthy lifestyles.
