Biodiversity and Species at Risk
Biodiversity: _____________________________________________
Benefits of biodiversity:
1.
Healthy coral reefs have a
high biodiversity. All kinds
of organisms live in coral
reefs. But when abiotic
features like water
temperature increase
biodiversity can be
affected.

Boreal Forest Species at Risk
Ontario's largest forest region, the Boreal forest is dominated by conifers, especially spruce. This is an
important habitat for large mammals such as Moose and Woodland Caribou, and birds such as the Great
Gray Owl and the Pileated Woodpecker.
There are a total of 28 species officially designated as being at risk in this region.
2 species are extinct and gone forever.
1 species is extirpated and no longer exists in Ontario.
5 species are endangered and close to disappearing from Ontario.
8 species are threatened indicating risk of becoming endangered.
12 species are of special concern who's characteristics make them sensitive to human activities or
natural events.
Make a pie chart showing the different classifications of species at risk.
To find the percentage: take how many animals in each classification and divide it by the total. Then
multiply that number by 100.
Example: 2/28= 0.07x100= 7.14%

Species at Risk
Biodiversity: the variety of species in an ecosystem
Benefits of biodiversity:
1.
Withstand disease
2. Droughts
3. Arrival of new species
How to protect biodiversity:
4. Prevent pollution
5. Prevent habitat loss
6. Introduction of new species
