World History 1 Troy Athens High School “Education is the key to unlock the golden door of freedom.” George Washington Carver “The important thing is not to stop questioning.” Albert Einstein Teacher Information: Mrs. Rice [email protected] Room 2522 Prep Period: 6th Hour 1:09-2:04 248.823.2900 Overview: The World History course is meant to help students understand the development of the modern world from the beginnings of civilization to the present. This course is chronologically organized and worldwide in scope. World History 1 will begin with the fall of the Roman Empire and move through Absolutism in Europe. At the conclusion of this course, students should view themselves as members of a global community, appreciate diversity in the world, and be able to make more informed decisions about world affairs. Suggested Supplies: Textbook: World History; Patterns of Interaction 2012 Notebook or paper in a binder Two pocket folder Favorite pen or pencil Classroom Policies: Show up and be on time. Students are expected to follow the school’s attendance and tardy procedures. Come prepared with quality work. Follow all school rules as stated in the Code of Conduct. Be respectful of other people in the classroom. Be respectful of all materials in the classroom. Make up missed work promptly. I follow the district’s policy and unexcused absences will result in a zero. If something is due, and you have an excused absence, it must be turned in the day you return to class. Late assignments are worth a maximum of 50% of the available points and will be accepted until the test covering the material is given. If you are absent, check the calendar or ask me about what you missed. Participate and have a positive attitude. It will go along way! Tests will be given throughout the semester. Quizzes will be given as necessary. Grading: Grading will be on a point system. All assignments, projects and tests will have a point value. Points will be converted to a percent for quarter grades. There will be a final examination at the end of the semester. This test will count for 10% of your final grade. Grading Scale: 90-100% - A 80-89.99% - B 70-79.99% - C 60-69.99% - D Below 60% is an E Academic Integrity: Students caught cheating will receive a zero on their assignment. If a student is caught with another student’s paper, both students will receive a zero on the assignment. Turn in your own work! 1st Quarter Topics: Review up to Rome 500BC – 500AD Time Frame- 1 week Reading- Chapter 6 Essential Question: What impact did the rise and fall of the Roman Empire have on culture, government, and religion? An assessment will be given at the end of the chapter. Islam-600AD-1250AD Time Frame- 2 weeks Reading- Chapter 10 The Muslim World Essential Question: How did Islam and the achievements of the Muslim world spread between 600 and 1250? An assessment will be given at the end of the chapter. Religions and Asian Culture- 400BC-550AD Time Frame- 2 weeks Reading-Chapter 7 India and China Establish Empires and World Religions and Ethical Systems (pages 282-294) Essential Question: How did India and China establish powerful empires and develop vibrant cultures? Project: World Religions Poster An assessment will be given at the end of the chapter. Byzantines, Russians and Turks 500-1500AD Time Frame- 1 week Reading- Chapter 11 Essential Question: What characterized the rise and interaction of Byzantine, Russian and Turkish civilizations in Central Asia? An assessment will be given at the end of the chapter. Empires in East Asia 600-1350AD Time Frame- 2 weeks Reading- Chapter 12 Essential Question: How did the development of kingdoms and empires in East Asia help spread religions, culture, trade and technological innovations? An assessment will be given at the end of the chapter. Europe in the Middle Ages 500-1200 Time Frame- 2 weeks Reading- Chapter 13 pages 350-374 and Chapter 14 pages 376-404 Essential Question- What impact did the rise and fall of the Roman Empire have on culture, government and religion? An assessment will be given at the end of the chapters. 2nd Quarter Topics: Societies and Empires of Africa 800-1500 Time Frame- 2 weeks Reading- Chapter 15 Essential Question- How did early African societies develop from hunting-gathering groups to empires? An assessment will be given at the end of the chapter. People and Empires in the Americas 500-1500 Time Frame- 1 week Reading- Chapter 16 Essential Question- How were the Mayans, Incas, and Aztecs similar and how were they different? An assessment will be given at the end of the chapter. Renaissance and Reformation 1300-1600 Time Frame- 2 weeks Reading- Chapter 17 Essential Question- What new ideas and values led to the Renaissance and Reformation? An assessment will be given at the end of the chapter. An Age of Exploration and Isolation 1400-1800 Time Frame- 1 week Reading- Chapter 19 Essential Question- What fueled the age of exploration and why did China and Japan withdraw into isolation? An assessment will be given at the end of the chapter. The Atlantic World 1492-1800 Time Frame- 1 week Reading- Chapter 20 Essential Question- What was the impact of European exploration and colonization of the Americas? An assessment will be given at the end of the chapter. Absolute Monarchs in Europe 1500-1800 Time Frame- 2 weeks Reading- Chapter 21 Essential Question- What were the causes and effects of absolute monarchies from 1500 until 1800? An assessment will be given at the end of the chapter. All time frames are approximate. I look forward to working with you this semester and welcome you to the world history 1 class.
