Drop the –ar ending 2. Add the appropriate ending for the subject being talked about (yo) (tú) é aste (él / ella / Ud.) nosotros ó amos (ellos / ellas / Uds.) aron *note accents in yo & él/ella/Ud. forms!* Verbs that end in -car and -gar have a spelling change in the yo form only of the preterite. AR verbs (like jugar) car: c=>qu that have a stemchange in the present buscar => yo busqué tense do not have a gar: g=>gu stem change in the pagar => yo pagué preterite. Direct Object Pronouns • Direct objects receive the action of a verb they answer the question “Whom?” or “What?” about a verb. – I bought shoes. o I bought what? Shoes. – In Spanish: Compré zapatos. • Pronouns take the place of nouns. So, direct object pronouns take the place of direct object nouns. – Previous example in English: I bought shoes. – With a direct object pronoun: I bought them. • Ejemplos en español: – Yo compré zapatos. -- Yo los compré. – Tengo el libro. -- Lo tengo. – Llevo la gorra. -- La llevo. In English, him, her, it, and them are examples of direct object pronouns. In Spanish, the direct object pronoun must agree in gender and in number with the noun it is replacing. Direct Object Pronouns: Singular lo [it, him, you (masc. Plural los [them, all of you] Usted)] la [it, her, you (fem. Usted)] las [them, all of you (fem.)] Direct object pronouns are placed directly before the conjugated verbs. – Busco los calcetines. – Los busco. – Tengo una gorra. – La tengo. When an infinitive follows the conjugated verb, the direct object pronoun can be placed before the conjugated verb or attached to the infinitive. Por ejemplo: – No voy a comprar la hamburguesa. • No la voy a comprar. Or: • No voy a comprarla. ¡A practicar! Rewrite each sentence using a direct object pronoun in place of the noun.
