Photosynthesis and Respiration Review Sheet
1. ATP: Adenosine Triphosphate
 Nucleic Acid with 3 phosphates
 Energy Storage molecule in the cell
 Energy stored between the phosphate bonds
 ADP + phosphate  energy stored ATP
2. Photosynthesis
Formula:
Sunlight + chlorophyll + 6H2O + 6 CO2  C6H12O6 + 6O2

Light Reactions:
Photosystem I: Sunlight + chlorophyll  Energy (NADPH)
Photosystem II: H2O is split  O2 released into air + H+ + ATP used for
the Calvin Cycle
Calvin Cycle (Light Independent Rxns):
CO2 reacts with special acceptor molecule + ATP + NADPH C6H12O6

3. Respiration
Basic Formula:
Glucose + 6O2  38ATPs + 6CO2 +6H2O

Glycolysis:
Glucose broken down into Pyruvic Acid + 2ATPs
Aerobic Respiration: IF OXYGEN IS PRESENT: then Pyruvic acid will enter the
 Kreb Cycle (Citric Acid Cycle):
Continuous reactions that makes 6CO2 and some ATPs

Electron Transport Chain:
o Energy released in Kreb Cycle in the form of electrons and H+ move
along chain  forming many ATPs
o Oxygen is the final acceptor in the chain and it will form 6H2O
4. Anaerobic Respiration (Fermentation): occurs in some organisms and in animal
muscle cells
Energy produced in the ABSENCE of oxygen – only makes a total of 4 ATPs

Alcoholic Fermentation: Bacteria and Yeast
Pyruvic Acid  2ATPs + CO2 + ethyl alcohol

Lactic Acid Fermentation: Muscle Cells
Pyruvic Acid  2 ATPs + CO2 + Lactic Acid
