Caring at a Distance. Staying Connected. Or - SeniorCare Options Hel www.seniorcareopt.com Geriatric Care Management for the Metro Atlanta Area Monthly Newsletter 770-579-9177 February is Cancer Prevention Month CANCER - The word can be an incredibly frightening term for people to hear. Cancer, itself, is not one disease but is actually many diseases in which abnormal cells divide without control and are able to invade other tissues. There are over 100 different types of cancer and the types are primarily named for the organ or type of cell in which they start. There were over 1.6 million new cases of cancer in the United States in 2013 and over 580,000 cancer related deaths. Just to provide a comparison, based on the US Census of 2010, the amount of new cases of cancer nationally is greater than the combined number of people living in the top 12 of Georgia’s most populated cities. And, the annual deaths from cancer in this country would fill over 10 times the maximum seating at Turner Field. Just take a moment to think of this… These numbers are staggering! So, what can we do to potentially reduce our own likelihood or those in our communities from becoming a statistic? 1) Be mindful of our weight, increase our activity level, and consume a balanced diet to best promote health. It is estimated by the American Cancer Society that being overweight or obese contributes to approximately 20% of cancer related deaths. This mindfulness tip can not only reduce the occurrence, recurrence, and mortality of cancer – but can also reduce the risk of other complicating conditions such as diabetes and heart disease. 2) Be mindful of environmental exposures. Avoid all tobacco products. Reduce exposure to UV Radiation from both natural and artificial sources. Limit alcohol consumption. Be aware and protect yourself with occupational risks. Just regarding tobacco use, it is reported that 30% of all cancer related deaths are related to smoking and second hand smoke causes over 3400 deaths annually in US for nonsmoking adults. Reducing consumption and exposure to tobacco, UV exposure, alcohol, and other environmental dangers greatly reduces one’s risk with even minimal changes. Less is more from this health standpoint! 3) Be mindful of personal risks due to genetics, personal choices, and environmental exposures while GETTING SCREENED for early detection. Early detection and treatment provides a much higher rate of survivability for all cancers. The American Cancer Society offers adult guidelines for the early detection of cancer, as well as other valuable information, through their website at www.cancer.org or 800-227-2345.
