OBSERVING AND COMPARING ANIMALS
This activity is adapted from FOSS: Animals 2X2. It provides
students the opportunity to observe and compare animals. It will be
important to teach students how to respect and care for these
animals. This is also an opportunity to help students see the value
in all animals. Therefore, avoid referring to them as gross, ugly,
yucky, or dirty. This is also a good opportunity to emphasize the
importance of making careful observations and recording them with
words and pictures. Drawings should be done using the ABCD
protocol: Accurate, Big, Colorful, Detailed. Observations should be
empirical or objective; therefore, opinions are not used when
making observations.

target(s)
๏I can describe similarities and differences between land and water snails.
๏I can use my senses and tools to make observations.
vocabulary observe (observation), senses, characteristic, animal, structure, function, shell,
foot, tentacles, eyes, head, mouth, mucus, operculum … plus adjectives (hard, soft, smooth, wet,
slimy, brown, yellow, red, black, long, short, one, two, four, etc)

DAY 1: Teach about using the four senses (I see, I
hear, I feel, I smell) to observe objects. Let students
carefully observe the land snail using a hand lens.
DAY 3: Create a pictorial input chart of a land snail
and add the structures.
DAY 4: Add adjectives to the pictorial input chart.
Model completing the graphic organizer for an
informative essay describing the land snail using the
sentence frames.
*repeat for water snail
DAY 11: Model using the box and t-chart to compare
the land and water snails.
DAY 12: Model completing the graphic organizer for
an informative essay comparing land and water
snails using the sentence frames.
DAY 2: Read a book about snails that include the
important structures of the snail.
DAY 11: Read “Snail Homes” as a class and have
students underline facts about land snails in green
and water snails in blue.
DAY 1: Have students choral respond the sentence
starters “I see ___”, “I feel ___”, etc. Have students
share their observations with a partner as they
observe. Have students share their observation with a
class as you write them on an input chart.
DAY 2: Have students repeat the structures as you
add the words to the pocket chart.
DAY 3: Have students repeat the names of the
structures as you label the pictorial input chart.
DAY 4: Have students repeat the sentence frames as
you fill in the graphic organizer.
*repeat for water snail
DAY 11: Have students share similarities and
differences between a land and water snail with a
partner and whole class.
DAY 2: Have students write down their observations
after reading the book using the structures and
characteristics from the pocket chart.
DAY 3: Have students create a drawing of the land
snail using the ABCD observation protocol.
DAY 4: Have students complete the graphic
organizer using the sentence frames.
DAY 5: Have students use their graphic organizer to
write their informative essay.
*repeat for water snail
DAY 11: Have students complete their own box and tchart to compare a land and water snail.
DAY 12: Have students complete their own graphic
organizer.
DAY 13: Have students use their graphic organizer to
write their essay.
checks for understanding
Check observations to make sure their are empirical and descriptive; not opinions. Check drawings to make
sure they are accurate, big, colorful and detailed. Assess their essays for content and writing.
