Critical appraisal of the use of panoramic tomographs and cone beam computed tomographs in orthodontics 14.45 - 15.10 Refreshments 15.10 - 16.20 Lecture 4 Interactive radiological interpretation – interactive Turning Point presentation to revise/test participants ability to recognise disease in the maxillofacial skeleton 16.20 - 16.50 Discussion 17.00 Close ‘Update in orthodontic radiography, radiation protection and radiological interpretation’ Learning Objectives This update course is primarily aimed at postgraduate trainees in orthodontics and is intended to provide a broad overview of the use of 2D and 3D X-ray imaging in orthodontics as well as revision of radiological interpretation of the more common diseases affecting the maxillofacial skeleton. By the end of the course participants should: Understand X-ray image creation – both film and digital – and their inherent limitations Know the risks of ionising radiation and the principles of radiation protection in orthodontics Know the radiation doses in dental & orthodontic radiography and the factors affecting radiation dose Understand the various tomographic imaging modalities available, including panoramic and cone beam (CBCT), their advantages and disadvantages in orthodontics and the various factors that affect diagnostic yield Be familiar with the more common diseases that can affect the maxillofacial skeleton which an orthodontist should be able to recognise Recommended reading: Essentials of Dental Radiography and Radiology 5th Ed, Eric Whaites, (Elsevier/Churchill Livingstone, 2013)
