Issues discussed
Data mining initiatives: Martin Keane/ Data Mining Consultant presented an overview of the data mining
process and how it could be applied to predicting the impact of particular programme decisions in
humanitarian/development sectors. This included information on the objectives of data mining, the types of
data variables and the steps taken in a data mining process. Also presented the usage of the outcome
model in prediction for independent variables with dependent variable in development and analysis
purposes. Martin has offered his support to demonstrate how this can be applied to available data and
options were discussed in the meeting.

Assessment of accountability to affected populations in Rakhine: Luis Esteves/ IM Officer, UNOHCA
presented the primary results of OCHA’s study on accountability to affected populations in Rakhine and
Kachin States. The six question assessment was conducted in the last week of May in Rakhine and first
week of June in Kachin State and included 30 focus group discussions with over 300 IDPs (male and
female) from 5 camps in Rakhine and 5 camps in Kachin, and with camp management committees. The
report will soon be released and preparations are underway to extend the reach of the study. Possible
questions for the next phase were discussed in the meeting.

IM Updates:
 ICT4D working Group: the last meeting was held in Phandeeyar and included discussion on the ICT
Sector wide impact assessment being undertaken by the Myanmar Centre for Responsible Business
and a focus on issues of protection led by Nicola Edwards from the British Council.
 SE Data Network: The next meeting on July 2nd will include presentations of the SE data catalogue tool
developed to collect and share information on available datasets across the SE, an overview of the
mapping issues of the SE, and available assessments which have been registered with the MIMU.

has been suggested to gather ideas to fine-tune activities. This could be conducted using a very simple
questionnaire in August/September 2015.
 Myanmar Election 2015: Various approaches are being developed by a number of agencies to support
the forthcoming election preparation and election process. This includes supporting tools and software
for collecting data on voter education and locating the voting booths. MIMU is following these
discussions.
Agency updates (Studies, activities, IM issues/ priorities):
 MIMU: recently conducted training in Sittwe (Excel and GPS), as well as a 12 day QGIS training
providing skills in the use of free mapping software. Additional GPS trainings are currently underway in
Kachin State (Myitkyina and Bhamo). MIMU will pilot the modules in the IM Orientation in the coming
month before rolling out the final IM orientation package. UNICEF/WASH and OCHA expressed interest
to participate.
 OCHA: has received the comments and feedback from MIMU and other partners for the mobile platform
trial of the Multi Sector Rapid Assessment tools (MIRA) and is currently finalising the questionnaire
based on the comments received.
 NPA: Serif will be leaving. Thant Zaw will be the new IM focal point for the IMSMA system.
