Stockholm
Convention
The Stockholm Convention held 30 years
ago. The whole world agreed on the urgent
need to respond to the problem of
environmental deterioration.
It was agreed that the protection of the
environment, and social and economic
development are fundamental to Sustainable
Development (based on the Rio Principles).
To achieve such development, the global
program Agenda 21 and the Rio Declaration to
reaffirm global commitment were adopted.
The Agenda 21 was localized based on the
maxim “Think globally, Act Locally” through our
Philippine Agenda 21.

•Global warming refers to the current rise in the
average temperature of Earth's atmosphere and
oceans and its projected continuation.
•It is caused by increasing concentrations of
greenhouse gases produced by human activities such
as deforestation and burning fossil fuels.
Problems caused by global warming
•An increase in global temperature will cause sea
levels to rise and will change the amount and pattern
of precipitation, and a probable expansion of
subtropical deserts.
•Other likely effects of the warming include more
frequent occurrence of extreme weather events
including heat waves, droughts and heavy rainfall
events, species extinctions due to shifting temperature
regimes, and changes in crop yields.
Global Warming
•Most countries are parties to the United Nations
Framework Convention on Climate Change
(UNFCCC),whose ultimate objective is to prevent
"dangerous" anthropogenic (i.e., human-induced)
climate change.
•Parties to the UNFCCC have adopted a range of policies
designed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and to assist in
adaptation to global warming.
