noun -- person, place, thing or idea
pronoun -- takes the place of a noun; ex: he for Bob
article -- the adjectives a, an, and the
adjective -- modifies a noun or pronoun
proper adjective -- an adjective formed from a proper noun and is always
capitalized
subject -- noun or pronoun (and all words describing noun/pronoun) that
tells who or what the sentence is about
prepositional phrase -- begins with a preposition and ends with a noun or
pronoun
verb -- expresses action or a state of being (to be)
verb phrase -- contains one or more helping verbs followed by a main verb
adverb -- modifies a verb, adjective or another adverb; often ends in -ly
predicate -- verb/verb phrase and any modifiers that make an essential
statement about the subject
conjunction -- word/words that joins other words together; ex: and, but
also, or
interjection -- a word or short phrase that expresses strong emotion
phrase -- a group of words that acts in a sentence as a single part of
speech; ex: The old man sitting in that blue chair is my grandfather.
clause -- group of words that has a subject and predicate and that is used
as part of sentence
