EDUCATION AND PREVIOUS PRACTICE :
I studied medicine in the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. After graduating,
I received the licence to practice medicine in 1987.
From April 1987 to June 1988, I did my military service as an army doctor.
From June 1988 to August 1989, I practiced Medicine in the Siatista Health Centre in
Northern Greece.
From November 1989 to November 1990, I worked as a resident in the second Surgery
Department of Athens University.
From December 1990 to July 1992, I worked as a resident in the Pediatric
Otorhinolaryngology Department in the P.& A. Kyriakou Children's Hospital of Athens.
From September 1992 to December 1992, I worked as Medical Supervisor on the clinical
research study of GM-CSF (Recombinant Human Granulocyte Macrophage Colony
Stimulating factor) at the medical department of Schering-Plough SA.
From December 14, 1992 to January 16, 1993, I served as a clinical elective in the
Division of Pediatric Otorhinolaryngology at Babies Hospital, Columbia-Presbyterian
Medical Centre, New York, U.S.A.
From January 18 to February 12, 1993, I was a visiting scholar in the Department of
Pediatric Otorhinolaryngology at Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh, U.S.A.
From May 1993 until September 1994, I worked as a resident in the Otorhinolaryngology
Department of Athens University.
From September 1994 until November 1995, I worked as chief resident
in the Otorhinolaryngology Department of Athens University.

From January 1996 until October 2002, I worked in the Otorhinolaryngology Department of

TEACHING
During my residentship in the ENT Department of Athens University I actively participated
in teaching the medical students and I was responsible for teaching the students of the
Athens University Nursery School.
During my postgraduate fellowship in the Universities of Pittsburgh and New York
I participated in the teaching activities of the residents.
In the ENT Department of Nottingham University I actively participated in the teaching
activities of the department with regard to medical students and residents for 7 years.
In the ENT Department of Athens University I actively participated in the teaching activities
of the department with regard to medical students, residents, and students of the Dentistry
School for 12 years.
Responsible for the post-graduate education lessons of the two Athens University
Departments in 2010-2011.

Medical Supervisor in the basic / clinical research of the GM-CSF (Granulocytemacrophage colony-stimulating factor) in the Athens medical research department of
Schering-Plough Pharmaceutical Co which led to the FDA approval.
European Community Research Fellowship (1997-1998) on Cochlear Implantation of
40.000 Euros.
Award of the International Ped.Otorhinolaryngology Society (1998) for the research on
speech development following paediatric cochlear implantation
Awards of the British Skull Base Society (1999 and 2001) for the research on acoustic
neuroma diagnosis and management.
Research Advisor of the Nottingham Pediatric Cochlear Implant Programme.
The outcomes of the cochlear implant research were reported by the Reuters and the
Indian Times in 2001. In addition, Reuters in 2006 published an interview on the outcomes
of cochlear implant research.
The new minimal invasive surgical approach for cochlear implantation was published in the
journal of Otology and Neurotology (O’Donoghue and Nikolopoulos) in 2002 and was
included in the book of Guinness World records in 2004 (the smallest surgical approach for
cochlear implantation).
The outcomes of the research on ophthalmic disorders of deaf children were reported in
the Chinese ENT journal in 2006.
Opinion leader in the International ENT Forum for the development of new vaccines for
otitis media in Budapest Hungary in 2008.
Co-Organiser of the 2-year research project of 100.000 Euros for the acoustic neuroma
research – collaboration of Athens University with the Universities of Cambridge,
Liverpool, Exeter / Plymouth, Nottingham and Belfast . The results have been published in
the web site www.hta.ac.uk,and the journal of Health Technology Assessment 2009; vol
13(18): 1-176, and the journal of Otology Neurotology. 2010; 31(3): 478-85.
Co-organiser of the research project on the development of hearing and speech skills
following cochlear implantation – collaboration with the University of Macedonia in
Thessaloniki and was funded by EPAEK and European Union in 2008.
Participation in the development of a Universal Hearing Screening Programme in Greece
which was approved by the Central Health Council in 2009.
Participation from 2012 in the guidelines committee of the European Academy of Otology
Neurotology on cochlear implants.
Participation from 2014 in the European Research project TINNET/COST of 112.000
Euros for 2014 for the investigation and management of hearing disorders associated with
tinnitus.

ADMINISTRATION – LEADERSHIP
1) Organisation and supervision of neonatal hearing screening program in Attiko University
Hospital (1500-2000 newborns per annum) from 2009 until today
2) Organisation and supervision as director of cochlear implant centre (adult and pediatric)
in Attiko University Hospital (approved by the Ministry of Health)
3) Organisation and supervision of pediatric audiology and otology department in Attiko
University Hospital from 2009 until today.
4) Organisation and supervision of 11seminars in otology and temporal bone lab surgery
with cadavers
5) Organisation and supervision of Otorhinolaryngology clinic in the Athens Department of
the Medicines of the World from 2003 until today (having examined over 10.000 patients)
6) Responsible of the postgraduate seminars of the 1st and 2nd ENT Departments of the
Athens University during 2010-2011.
7) Director of the 2nd ENT Department if Athens University when the Director had an
annual leave or research/congress leave from 2007 until today.
8) Organisation of special clinics in the 2nd Otorhinolaryngology Department of Athens
University – oncology, rhinology, pediatric deafness, voice and swallowing disorders.

SOCIAL – VOLUNTARY WORK
From 2002 until today I organise and run voluntary Otorhinolaryngology clinics every week
in the Athens Department of Medecins du Monde.
