SA Heart. 2009; 6: 272 RESEARCH INTEREST My research interest is within the field of interventional pericardiology where I am evaluating the diagnostic value of percutaneous pericardioscopy and pericardial biopsy in a population with a high prevalence of tuberculous (TB) pericarditis. My aim is to further develop and refine current diagnostic protocols for TB pericarditis and broaden our understanding of the pathogenesis of this disease which is responsible for considerable morbidity and mortality throughout the African continent. I plan to complete my PhD researching TB pericarditis and through this research to also expand the research framework into pericardial diseases at Stellenbosch University. CAREER OBJECTIVE To establish myself as a leading clinician scientist in the field of tuberculous pericardial disease and pursue a career within academic medicine in South Africa.
