LESSON 6.2
Name
Find Mean, Median, and Mode
When a list of data is written in order from least to
greatest, the number in the middle is called the median.
The number that occurs most often is called the mode.
The mean is the number found by dividing the sum of the
numbers by the number of addends.
John’s quiz scores from Monday through Friday were: 9, 4, 9, 5, 8.
Step 1: List the scores in order from least to greatest.
4, 5, 8, 9, 9
Cross out one number from each end until only
one number is left.
4, 5, 8, 9, 9
The number in the middle is the median.
Step 2: The number that occurs most often is the mode.
4, 5, 8, 9, 9
Step 3: Add all of the numbers in the data set.
9 4 9 5 8 35
Divide the sum by the number of addends.
There are 5 addends: 35 5 7
The quotient is the mean.
For John’s quiz scores, the median is 8, the mode is 9, and
the mean is 7.
List the data from least to greatest. Find the median and the mode.
Then find the sum of the numbers and the mean.
